20 New-Season Pieces To Start Your Year Off Right

Words by The MR PORTER Team

2 January 2024

We don’t need the start of a new year as an excuse to justify diving into the new season of excellent garments from our favourite designers. But if it helps you, by all means think of this list of 20 as your guide to a new you (or, same you, different clothes). Even one of these stylish finds will mark an auspicious start to 2024.

01. The bright and bold Hermès Timepieces watch

Hermès Timepieces did not disappoint with the follow-up to 2021’s much-loved H08, releasing a collection of brightly coloured variants in blue, orange, yellow and green that doubled down on the watch’s casual elegance. The standout feature in many ways was, in fact, the aluminised glass fibre case that brings a lightweight, unusual option to watchmaking’s crowded menu of materials. Dozens of brands try to be sporty and stylish, but Hermès is one of the few that has truly achieved it.

02. The imposing Saman Amel overcoat

Some coats are made for braving the elements; others for simply cocooning yourself in for maximum comfort. We’re not saying this Saman Amel overcoat won’t keep you warm, dry or cosy, but look at it: its primary purpose is evidently to make you look really gosh-darned important. This is a coat that will lengthen your stride, straighten your spine and bring a firm set to your jaw. A coat of purpose. A coat, dare we say it, of power.

03. The Elder Statesman’s heavenly beanie

It is something of a myth that you lose more heat through your head than any other part of your body – apparently derived from a 1970s US Army training manual. But still, when it comes to your brain box, why take any chances? Treat your cranium to the finest, most comfortable and, let’s face it, most enjoyably colourful beanie hat that money can buy with this ribbed cashmere number from The Elder Statesman.

04. The high-contrast Bottega Veneta sweater

Don’t let the colour scheme of this Bottega Veneta sweater worry you – it’s not poisonous or hazardous. Quite the opposite, in fact. The soft wool with its ribbed edges will provide warmth and comfort in the colder months. Also, despite the intarsia stitched checkerboard pattern, there is no obligation to ride a racehorse at any point. We suggest more relaxed activities, like settling down with that book you never got around to reading last year.

05. The stand-out KAPITAL patchwork jeans

To call clothing “distressed” suggests it has endured some sort of anxiety, loss or trauma, but a pair of jeans worn out at the knee has truly lived its best life. KAPITAL’s Monkey Cisco pair comes with good memories built-in, like a Total Recall implant, but in patch form. The cut is the only thing that’s straight about these.

06. The nature-inspired Jacques Marie Mage sunglasses

Often considered the world’s oldest national park, there’s a lot to take in at Yellowstone. Stand well back – particularly from the geysers, bears and wolves – and protect your peepers with a pair of these from Jacques Marie Mage. They’re made in collaboration with the non-profit organisation Yellowstone Forever, in a colourway inspired by the park’s autumn foliage. And, much like one picnic basket-swiping almost-resident, they’re smarter than the average.

07. The fluffy Jil Sander sweater

Minimalism seems to suggest bare, brutalist compounds containing just Mr Kanye West and very little in the way of furniture. But you can appreciate functional form – and also fun. Case in point, this sweater by Jil Sander, which, while pure of aesthetics and colour, is maxed-out when it comes to texture.

08. The sharp Umit Benan B+ wool suit jacket

The double-breasted jacket is having a moment, sure. But then, invest wisely and you’ll see returns for many years to come. This example by Umit Benan B+ is modern, yet as timeless as they come. Painstakingly constructed by Italian craftspersons, it offers a crisp, streamlined silhouette in a midnight blue that will pop under nightlights.

09. The everyday visvim sneakers

Is this the season that you finally invest in a pair of sneakers that are different from any pair you already own? Here, visvim makes the case for bold kicks – and the fringed suede heels nod to the Japanese brand’s fondness for classic Americana.

10. The PATTARAPHAN fungi necklace

Thought fashion’s obsession with fungi (that we’ll call mushroomcore) was over? Think again – PATTARAPHAN’s Shroom necklace proves it’s still going strong. The slim, sterling-silver chain is strung with a fungi-shaped pendant set with glistening diamonds across its cap.

11. The fuzzy Our Legacy cardigan

Sitting in between a classic cardigan and a polo, this Our Legacy knit is everything you need to take your layering game to the next level. The plush blend of alpaca keeps you warm, while its fine handle allows you to wear it as a base, mid or top layer, beneath a heavier knit or underneath a slim jacket.

12. The BODE floral shirt

Florals for spring might not have been “groundbreaking” in The Devil Wears Prada, but the motif on this BODE shirt certainly is (and more likely inspired by Midsommar). The camp collar and slightly boxy fit gives it a relaxed appeal. Style it solo or layer yours over a tank top.

13. The on-the-go LOEWE tote

A remix of LOEWE’s signature bag design, the Puzzle Fold tote is the perfect combination of versatility and style. Crafted in Spain from smooth leather, this extra-large tote boasts an understated design that will effortlessly complement any outfit. Its ability to fold completely flat adds an element of practicality for all occasions, from commutes to weekend trips.

14. The luxurious Loro Piana polo

Face the new year wrapped in unparalleled softness courtesy of this Loro Piana cashmere polo shirt. Made from the luxurious material sourced from Mongolia, this piece reflects the brand’s dedication to quality. It’s a shortcut to elevate your casual style – whether with relaxed-fit trousers or a pair of jeans on a leisurely weekend.

15. The statement Gallery Dept. trousers

Looking to add some fashion-forward pieces to your wardrobe this year? Look no further than Gallery Dept.’s suede (yes, suede) trousers. As unconventional as they are, the trousers are easy to wear, thanks to a smooth silk lining. With a worn-in appearance that’s designed to deepen over time, it’s almost like getting two (or even three) pairs of trousers for the price of one.

16. The sport-luxe Enfants Riches Déprimés sweater

The preppy look is always in style, but if preppy with a twist is more your thing, then this rugby-inspired sweater from Enfants Riches Déprimés is for you. It has an asymmetric hem that adds an edgy touch while the stripes on the sleeves nod to the sporty roots of the Ivy League look. Knitted from soft cashmere in a deep green hue, it’s plenty cosy and perfect for layering over a white shirt.

17. The striped Acne Studios button-down

You can buy a cotton button-down from anyone these days, but Acne Studios has a way of taking ubiquitous pieces and spinning gold. Here, as an example, the humble shirt is elevated via a boxy silhouette, a pyjama-like stripe and a teeny logo emoji patch on the chest. There is no chance you’ll be mistaken for someone who shops on the high street, rather fellow fashion heads will turn as you cruise on by.

18. The look-at-me Gucci boots

Sometimes, you need stealth luxe. And then sometimes, you need boots that draw the eye and elicit “oohs” and “aahs”. These Gucci boots are absolutely in the latter camp thanks to their signature monogram and rubber-crepe platform soles. You can go all-out with the rest of your outfit or dial it back to make these the star. Choose your own adventure.

19. The hand-me-down CHERRY LOS ANGELES hoodie

Why spend years breaking in a sweatshirt so that it has that perfectly soft, slightly faded vintage-y feel? The good folks at CHERRY LOS ANGELES have done the heavy lifting for you with this logo-appliqued cotton zip-up, somehow managing to achieve a lived-in effect on a brand-new closet staple. We love the collegiate font and cowboy vibes and highly recommend purchasing the matching sweatpants – you know, just for fun.

20. The elegant TOM FORD messenger

If you’re looking for a bag that’s not too big and not too small, this croc-effect TOM FORD messenger bag should be your first port of call. Wrought in a soft brown-grey nubuck, this full-grain bag will fit you phone and wallet plus the few other bits and pieces you need while out and about. A stylish upgrade and guaranteed to be greeted with more compliments than that complimentary tote.
