THE JOURNAL

For most, July 2023 will be remembered as the month that brought us the blockbuster double bill that was “Barbenheimer” and singlehandedly revived cinema-going in the process (that is, before bringing the whole of Hollywood to a grinding halt by way of the Sag-Aftra strikes). For us at MR PORTER, however, it’ll be the month that had us adding paint-splattered jeans to our basket, falling back in love with Bottega Veneta bags and wondering whether or not we could pull off metallic trousers.
No clue what we’re on about? Well, it turns out, while the rest of the world was picking a side in the pop-culture debate of the decade and cramming in five back-to-back hours of eye strain, some of the most stylish men on the planet were stealthily turning out a few of their most suave looks of the year so far. And no worries if you were too distracted by Mr Cillian Murphy’s cheekbones and/or Mr Ryan Gosling’s abs to clock them –we’ve helpfully rounded them all up in a tidy best-dressed list below.

Mr Brad Pitt

Is it OK to dress like a man half your age? When you look like a man half your age the answer is an obvious yes. In a case of life imitating art, Mr Brad Pitt – who is 59 in Earth years – seems to be spending this summer playing out a real-life version of his own starring role in The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button. And while there’s no doubt an elaborate hair, skin and fitness regime to thank for his preternaturally youthful appearance – and possibly some kind of blood ritual – his personal style has also played a role. This outfit, which the actor wore to the British Grand Prix last month, is a case in point: clean-cut chinos, Converse sneakers and a white T-shirt lay the foundations, while a checked coach jacket from Mr P. adds a smart finishing touch. This is the sort of dad style you’ll want to steal.

Mr Cillian Murphy

Destroyer of worlds? Mr Cillian Murphy certainly looked, ahem, the bomb when he – briefly – turned up for the London premiere of Oppenheimer, in which he plays the eponymous physicist. Dressed by SAINT LAURENT (Murphy, not Oppenheimer), the chest you can just about see through the sheer shirt is the model’s own. Despite being restricted to one tone, the all-black ensemble managed to pack in patterns, textures, high-waisted trousers and the brand’s signature Chelsea boots, upon which the actor performed an abrupt volte-face in support of the Sag-Aftra strike. And while we don’t know much about quantum field theory, Murphy left us in an excited state.

Mr Dew Jiwarat

It’s the middle of summer, but the drab weather here in London is making us pine for autumn already. And nothing gets us more excited for the next season than seeing a well-dressed men step out in a rich autumnal palette. Attending the Bottega Veneta FW23 show, Thai actor Mr Dew Jirawat wore a sophisticated yet cosy fit that can best be summed as “autumn goals” – in part thanks to the brand’s signature Intrecciato bag in a forest-green shade and a pair of buttery crimson-red leather heeled mules. And take note how layering a warm grey suit with snug knitwear underneath keeps it more on the casual side – and offers an inventive way to get plenty more wear out of your wedding-season tailoring.

Mr Troye Sivan

Double denim is a tricky look to pull off, but if you’re Australian singer (and one-time MR PORTER cover star, might we add) Mr Troye Sivan, there seems to be no wrong way of doing it. The 28-year-old Johannesburg native – who’s just released a strong contender for the single of the summer – kept accessories to a minimum (save for the chunky commando boots), mixed denim washes and appeared to have thrown some red paint splatter in the mix. He might have not read this, but we could all learn a thing or two about keeping our crisp white T-shirts… white.

Mr Bill Nighy

We had to double check to make sure this image of Mr Bill Nighy wasn’t taken on the set of a period film – because it’s not every day that you see a man so utterly perfectly dressed in a well-fitting suit. The thick black frames, the arm-slung umbrella, and a fistful of reading material are the cherry-on-top accessories to this (likely) Savile Row suit. Nota bene: the classic spread of the shirt collar and the neutral tie. There’s no reason you can’t be dressing like this, too.

Mr Mika Hashizume

It’s hard to choose what is shining brightest in Mr Mika Hashizume’s outfit: the silver trousers, the pristine white shirt or his platinum-blond buzzcut. The Japanese-American singer and model may not be a global household name yet (although fans of his J-Pop boy band, Intersection, may beg to differ), but he is rapidly building up his fashion resumé with magazine covers and a front-row seat at Bottega Veneta’s show in Beijing.
Here, he’s wearing the brand’s laminated leather trousers, which are detailed with the signature Intrecciato weave, and a classic button-down shirt worn open over the oh-so-popular tank top. And not many people can get away with matching their hairdo to their shoes, but Hashizume manages to pull it off with his camel suede desert boots.

Mr Jeremy O’ Harris

Has Mr Jeremy O’Harris caught the “quiet luxury” bug? Anyone who’s a regular reader of MR PORTER’s best-dressed lists will know the American playwright typically sits on the more maximalist end of the sartorial spectrum – he was one of the most fervent champions of Mr Alessandro Michele’s Gucci, if that’s saying anything.
This month, however, he’s thrown us off a little, attending the Valentino show wearing a suave tailored set in a pared-down black-and-white palette. But far from being snoozeville, the outfit packs plenty of punch by way of lustrous fabrics, subtle details (that tie!) and a luxurious cream coat that could make anyone look like a million bucks. And no doubt having a confident swagger, beaming smile and one of the most enviable, unmissable afros on the planet also helps turn a brilliant outfit into a best-dressed-list-worthy one.
