THE JOURNAL

Awards season is over, spring is here and March brought with it a wealth of sartorial inspiration for the in-between months. Sure, we still saw some excellent suits – Austin Butler’s pinstriped number, Guy Remmers’ contemporary, lustrous Brioni get-up and Cha Eun-woo’s grown-up spezzato to name a few. But what we’re most excited about is how the uber stylish have approached trans-seasonal wear, whether that’s by way of an overshirt in team colours in lieu of a jacket or a well-layered raincoat. See for yourself below – and take note.
01. Lewis Hamilton

If you’re still adjusting to Sir Lewis Hamilton in Ferrari’s rosso corsa, note that the driver himself seems quite taken with the colour. During qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix last month, Sir Lewis was spotted in head-to-toe Bottega Veneta drip that steered into the red regalia of his new team, with an oversized checked overshirt and oxblood leather shoes. And it’s a look that you can buy here, now – rather than wait another year to see on Drive To Survive.
02. Austin Butler

Austin Butler rocked up at the SAINT LAURENT AW25 womenswear show in a suit that could’ve been plucked from the wardrobe of the late designer himself, Yves Saint Laurent. Obviously, the hair is slightly ruffled and the thick-rimmed glasses and Gitanes are missing. But then, making this look his own is what stops the American actor from springing the trap of cosplay. So, while the designer would’ve appreciated the shape and certainly the striped tie of this ensemble, it’s what the wearer brings to it that counts.
03. Guy Remmers

In a recent interview, Guy Remmers claimed that he’s got the gift of the gab. Which may be the case, but here, he lets his sense of style do the talking. Last week, he stepped out at the Brioni x MR PORTER event in celebration of the Italian brand’s 80th anniversary wearing a lustrous two-piece from the label’s exclusive capsule. Name someone who looks just as smart in a modern take on the Harrington jacket as he would in a three-piece suit… We can wait.
04. Cha Eun-woo

There’s a classic, grown-up elegance to the Korean actor and singer Cha Eun-woo’s mixed-up SAINT LAURENT look, which taps into a mid-century aesthetic last seen in In The Mood For Love or a Mad Men summer party. The tonal language, however, wouldn’t be out of place on the dessert menu of a beloved Italian trattoria, with soft pinkish whites and biscuity oatmeals thrown together with rich raspberry reds. The result is a spezzato outfit that at once could be worn to dinner and inspire the last course of it.
05. Michael Fassbender

In Steven Soderbergh’s new spy wheeze, Black Bag, Michael Fassbender plays a British operative tasked with plugging a high-security leak, with his wife, played by Cate Blanchett, among the suspects. Thankfully, Fassbender didn’t turn up to the New York premiere wearing a black bag. Rather, a dashing striped three-quarter, double-breasted suit and skinny tie by Dior. As for the coloured sunglasses, there’s no hiding behind a piece of hardware by Jacques Marie Mage. Now that’s the kind of asset we’d hope to handle in the field.
06. Pedro Almodóvar

With an average of around two years between films, the next Pedro Almodóvar joint can’t be too far away. Indeed, his follow up to The Room Next Door is said to be a Christmas movie – and just maybe ours came extra early with this appearance. The signatures are there: dark glasses, blouson jacket and sneakers as white as his hair, all key pieces that the Spanish director has in his locker. The twist here is a pared-back colour palette and refined materials, with the jacket hewn from a glossy leather.
07. A$AP Rocky

Mastering the art of layering is key in the trans-seasonal months, and few do it better than A$AP Rocky. The normcore combination of sporty layers up top – half-zip fleece and rain parka – paired with firmly pressed trousers and Derbies mean that the guy truly knows how to dress for any occasion. The details matter: a crocheted, peter pan-collar blouse by Miu Miu, a Patek Philippe Nautilus watch that perfectly matches the royal blue of the trousers and statement jewellery.
08. Sampha

Finally, British singer-songwriter Sampha, who’s certainly pinned down the shade that works for him. He’s opted for a fisherman-style, utility-inspired safari jacket from Lacoste that’s polished enough not to look out of place over a knitted polo. Matching trousers, low-key sneakers and a well-chosen set of accessories tie in this tonal look perfectly.
