Robert De Niro’s robe in Casino, the fur hoodie worn by Cam’ron at New York Fashion Week in the early 2000s, and Vegeta’s Badman shirt from Dragon Ball all converge to one single universal truth: real men wear pink. And believe it or not, it was not until the middle of the 20th century that the colour was suggested as a female-focused colour by marketing executives devising a feminine code of consumption for the Western world. Thankfully, fashion designers and trendsetters have been hard at work to deconstruct societal archetypes and break conventions.
This season, different hues of pink found their way into the propositions of notable style leaders including tailoring lords Paul Smith and TOM FORD, and storied houses Burberry and SAINT LAURENT. For his final collection as creative director of his eponymous brand, the menswear maverick Dries van Noten leaned heavily on pops of pink. If they say it’s OK, then why are you still hesitant?
Below, evidence that pink is unequivocally one of the trendiest, most stylish colours for guys. It is not the mind-blowing choice it once was, thanks to its normalisation on the world’s runways and red carpets. Nevertheless, it acts as a great personality marker to stand out in ubiquitous crowds of blacks and greys and blues. It’s also a reminder for those around you that colours do not in fact have genders, and being frightened by such connotations is simply nonsense. So, yes, real men do wear pink. Here’s how.

01. Style it with denim
Denim is most likely the staple of your wardrobe, all year long, no matter the weather. And blue jeans are the Swiss Army knives of menswear – reliable, practical, and ready to rise to the (everyday) occasion, be it going for a walk, picking up the kids from school or running errands. They are effortless without being underwhelming – as proven by Pharrell Williams, who can ennoble every garment he wears – when coupled with a pink item, like this sleek TOM FORD cotton-blend sweater.

02. With black
Black is the shade that makes every other colour stand out without projecting signs of sartorial self-importance. This is the moment to pull out the hot pink and own it. Just like Michael B Jordan – whose sense of fashion is impeccable – pair this cashmere- and cotton-blend cardigan from The Elder Statesman with a white tank top and black trousers.

03. With tailoring
When it comes to elevating your tailoring game, a pink shirt can do the trick. But it must be the right combo, as exhibited here by Tom Holland who evidently knows a thing of two about colour matching. It would be difficult to convince any style aficionado that this baby pink Oxford shirt from Brioni and this chocolate double-breasted linen suit jacket courtesy of Brunello Cucinelli are simply not a glorious chef’s kiss.

04. Accessories
We know Justin Bieber’s ostentatious pink Valentino Garavani beanie might attract too much attention for those of you who are still a little wary of pink (honestly, get over it). But there is a wide range of accessories to help you jump on the trend in a subtler way. From Nike’s Zoom Vomero 5 sneakers to these uber-cool CELINE HOMME acetate sunglasses, and from a TOM FORD basketweave silk necktie to a gold diamond ring adorned with pink sapphires, it is all about including one element that will let us know you know what you are doing.

05. All in
Your life may not be punctuated by regular red-carpet appearances like Colman Domingo’s, but it doesn’t mean you’re not to indulge in head-to-toe pink. What’s stopping you? Nothing. Although hot pink is, well, hot, a powdered tint fits any serious summer occasion like your best friend tying the knot. This linen suit designed by Mr P. will look suitably elegant with a tonal shirt by Canali.
