If travel is the ultimate source of inspiration, then Byredo’s Mr Ben Gorham – a Swede of French-Canadian, Scottish and Indian heritage, who’s lived everywhere in pretty much every major city on the planet – certainly has a bottomless well to draw from. Here, he nods to formative childhood trips to Chembur in Mumbai with a rich, smoky aroma of amber, tonka and sandalwood that’s sure to leave a lasting impression.

Citrusy, splashy and utterly intoxicating, TOM FORD’s blue-bottled bestseller is an icon of the fragrance world and a fixture in every stylish man’s stash. But for those yet to succumb to its charms (or those of its wearers), imagine an evocative portrait of postcard-perfect summers on the Italian Riviera courtesy of bergamot, Sicilian lemon and, yes, neroli.

Scent snobs would do well not to sleep on Aesop – the cult brand’s underrated fragrance line includes an array of lesser-known gems, including this distinctive eau de parfum. And don’t let the modest apothecary-style packaging fool you, either: created in homage to Morocco’s most enchanting city, it’s a heady fusion of cardamom, clove, patchouli and jasmine that conjures up those colourful souks and riads.

Rock’n’roll fragrance brand 19-69 is Swedish artist Mr Johan Bergelin’s best-known oeuvre, with each scent in the line-up taking cues from a “countercultural” moment or place in history. Orange Kush, a collaboration with streetwear label Palm Angels, is one for 1990s kids – an effervescent medley of citrus and hemp that evokes the skateparks of Venice Beach and Santa Monica.

With the floral Cyrnos scent, the noses at Cire Trudon join a long list of artists who’ve been inspired by the sun-dappled splendour of the Cote d’Azur (Mr F Scott Fitzgerald and Ms Coco Chanel to name but a few). The fragrance is so named after a high-society hangout in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin during the belle epoque years, and is bursting with notes of black fig, pine and lavender that recall the mansion’s magical jardins.

No points for guessing which country inspired Diptyque’s universally adored figgy fragrance (names don’t get much more Hellenic than “Philosykos”). Described as “a tribute to Greece” by the brand – more specifically the fig groves of Mount Pelion in Thessaly in the summer – the fragrance extracts all the deliciousness from the sap, the leaves and the wood for a result that’s full-bodied yet fresh.

On first glance, the picturesque Le Perche in Normandy appears a world away from the slick and unashamedly sexy milieu of Mr Francis Kurkdjian (we’d imagine bottles of Baccarat Rouge are hard to come by). As it happens, the terroir was a childhood haunt of the haute perfumer, and this comforting blend of lavender, thyme and rosemary brings its charming landscape to life.
