THE JOURNAL
Showing up for your loved ones doesn’t have to mean turning up with huge gifts come the big day. We all know that good things come in small packages, after all – and even better things come in jewellery boxes.
Gifting a necklace, bracelet, earrings or even a ring is sure to earn you the title of best gift-giver this festive season. For one, you can find the perfect present without needing to know too much about their individual style, but your gift will still feel more personal than a candle or a pair of socks, however luxurious. For another, jewellery is something they can keep forever – and pass onto the next generation. And lastly, if you opt for versatile and understated pieces, they’re guaranteed to work double time in their wardrobe, far beyond this holiday season.
If you are looking for a truly special gift, you’re in the right place. MR PORTER’s fine jewellery department features some of the most exciting and in-demand jewellery brands in the world – here, we’ve picked out a few favourites to get you started.
01. The bracelets
If your recipient favours a more classic style (and happens to own a few luxury watches), you can’t go wrong with a bracelet. Opt for Chopard’s bracelet – inspired by 1960s racing car tyres – for a colleague. Or show a friend or family member how much they mean to you with 42 SUNS’ tennis bracelet, set with vibrant amethyst and peridot stones. If their style sits on the more adventurous side of things, try Stephen Webster’s chunky bracelet, engraved with the brand's Cuban leaf pattern and set with lapis lazuli.
02. The earrings
If you’re browsing for earrings, we’ll assume you know your recipient pretty well – or perhaps you’re looking for something to treat yourself to. Go big with SHAY’s white-gold pair, set with rectangle-cut sapphires, or keep it understated with Ouie’s 14-karat gold earring, inspired by the links of an old-school keyring. Ready to switch things up and call time on your usual choices? Yvonne Léon’s set of three – encrusted with black diamonds, tsavorites and white diamonds respectively – should be your port of call.
03. The necklaces
A necklace has the ability to instantly elevate an outfit, however casual it may be. Suzanne Kalan’s tennis style, for instance, works well with formal and relaxed looks alike – and can be left long or wrapped around twice. Foundrae’s gold and malachite choker also leaves space for its wearer’s creativity. It’s designed to be customised with the brand’s medallion charms, which can be attached to its oval rings. Sydney Evan’s necklace feature a slim chain, but is strung with a large crescent moon pendant that’s said to protect against evil and promote well-being.
04. The rings
A ring may be one of the most personal gifts – not only do you have to know their size, but you also have to be a pretty good connoisseur of their existing jewellery collection. Piaget’s Possession ring, which is designed with two 18-karat white-gold bands, one polished and one engraved, and set with a single diamond, is a classic for fans of silver-hued metals. If they’re not new to the art of mixing metals, get them MAOR’s signet ring, centred with a glistening tourmaline, or Spinelli Kilcollin’s interlocking stacked bands, one of which is pavé-set with blackened diamonds.
