THE JOURNAL

In his recent book Status And Culture, Mr W David Marx argues that, while rapid trend changes feel like they are dictated by the constant churn of TikTok’s algorithm, the styles of the near past are never out of fashion. Classics endure, even in the metaverse. Which is why, as Nike reports more than 21 million visitors to its Roblox store in less than a year since launch, the virtual products bringing punters to Nikeland are its iconic reissues. Two of the brand’s 1980s stalwarts are revisited in physical form here, along with the return of two legendary running shoes by New Balance.

Terminator High “Georgetown” by Nike

First released the year after the Mr Arnold Schwarzenegger film of the same name, the Terminator has, in recent years, found itself in the shadow of the Air Force 1, Dunk and Jordan. But the Big Nike is back (it told you it would be), travelling forward in time from 1985, and in its most celebrated colourway, a nod to the regalia of the Georgetown Hoyas basketball team (although they had “Hoyas” rather than “Nike” emblazoned across the heel).

Air Force 1 Low Retro by Nike

While most of us enter our fifth decade with a trepidatious sense of losing our relevance (along with perhaps a failure to get to grips with modern sensibilities, gender issues and social media platforms), Nike’s talismanic basketball shoe has its ear (well, sole) to the ground. The latest in a run of premium reissues to celebrate its 40th birthday (we caught up with the University Red iteration in August), this latest Air Force 1 comes with a bold bubblegum-pink Swoosh and a gold insignia on the tongue.

1500 Made In UK by New Balance

When it comes to England’s majestic Lake District, thoughts more often turn to the output of the Romantic poets than the sneaker industry. And yet what New Balance’s iconic 1500 line shares with Mr William Wordsworth is its stomping ground.Manufactured in Cumbria since 1982, the Made In UK label is today worn as a badge of pride. This reissue of the classic silhouette marks the 40th anniversary of the brand’s outposts in the English northwest. And long may this chunky shoe float on high o’er vales and hills.

990 Made In USA Teddy Santis by New Balance

The original pace-setting 990 may date back to 1982, but this edition is based on the V3, which was released a decade ago to celebrate the sneaker’s 30th birthday. Up to speed? (The idea is that you will be in this running shoe.) This model also celebrates the tenure of the Aimé Leon Dore designer Mr Teddy Santis helming New Balance’s premium Made In USA line. Previously seen in an array of colours, from the neutral Moonbeam to the more lively Raw Amethyst and Scarlet, this version sits nearer the former.
