THE JOURNAL

Who were the best-dressed men at the 2016 Emmy awards in Los Angeles? We pick the five most stylish red-carpet walkers from the night.
The 2016 Emmys have come to a close and we have to say we’re not hugely surprised by the results. Game Of Thrones, one of the most continually obsessed-about shows on TV, was named Outstanding Drama Series again. Mr Rami Malek scooped the Outstanding Actor award for his mesmerizing performance in Mr Robot. The People Vs OJ Simpson also did rather well. And Dame Maggie Smith got a nod (Outstanding Supporting Actress, for Downton Abbey). But of course, as ever, MR PORTER’s eyes were firmly trained on the outfits, most of which were tuxedos, but many of which were, perhaps surprisingly, navy rather than black – a trend we have been remarking upon for some time. Scroll down to discover who wore it best, and how.

Some might consider Narcos' Mr Pedro Pascal’s take on the navy tux a little scruffy for an awards ceremony, but we rather like it. It’s a bold move to pair a dressy tux with a straight necktie, but along with the large, retro glasses and round-toed derbies, it works – it's a take on evening wear that has that slight air of gawkiness that we admire so much in runway collections from the likes of Prada and, recently, Gucci.

One of the nice things about the Emmys is that you see some people who you know primarily for one standout TV role in a completely different light. Such is the case with Mr Paul Sparks, who plays a rather dishevelled (and conflicted) novelist in Netflix’s House Of Cards. In short we’ve never seen him look so incredibly spiffy – there doesn’t seem to be a crease on this black tuxedo, in which the jacket fits perfectly (ie not too tight) and the slim trousers elongate Mr Sparks’ silhouette.

Though his latest romantic entanglements prompted a bit of a media backlash, Mr Tom Hiddleston seldom puts a foot wrong when it comes to red-carpet dressing, as demonstrated above. The tuxedo fits perfectly but it’s also a particularly interesting example, with a sharp silk ribbon trim at the edge of the lapels. Navy, of course – Mr Hiddleston is one of the frontrunners of this trend and shows no sign of abandoning it mid-flow now that everyone else has cottoned on, too.

Mr Malek

Again, it’s so strange to see Mr Malek in anything but a hoodie, pulled tightly over his people-hating face in Mr Robot. But here he is, transformed, in a white dinner jacket. Obviously, this kind of super-formal, summery outfit looks particularly good if you’re also clutching a giant golden award, but Mr Malek has pulled it off well in any case, first of all by keeping it all very simple and second of all adding just a dash of something extra, in the form of a delicate, densely dotted pocket square. A winner in more ways than one.

Mr Joel Kinnaman

Mr Joel Kinnaman has the perfect frame for wearing a tux, so has wisely stuck to a very classic varietal in black. In fact, this is red carpet 101, from the shiny oxford shoes to the sharp black bow tie, patterned pocket square and contrast buttoned dress shirt. Perhaps he’s naturally stylish. Or could it be something to do with the fact that he recently appeared in MR PORTER’s online magazine The Journal? We daren’t say either way – you decide.
