By now, you or someone you love has probably seen Normal People on the BBC or Hulu. (If this is not the case, get yourself to a nearby screen and treat yourself to one of the most heady and indulgent shows on television right now.) But even if you haven’t watched the show, you may have heard a little a few whispers about a certain chain.
Connell’s chain, to be exact, the simple, silver necklace worn by the show’s leading man has viewers feeling some kind of way – some kind of amorous way, to be precise. There’s even an Instagram account devoted to this particular accessory: @connellschain has been up and running for less than a week, but already has already racked up 45,000 followers and counting. Yes, you read that correctly: forty-five thousand. Its feed is populated by close-up shots of the neck of Mr Paul Mescal (who plays Connell and who The Journal had the pleasure of speaking to on the subject of Normal People’s release) sporting the thin piece of jewellery that has inflamed so many hearts, accompanied by a litany of comments from its countless admirers.
We could deconstruct exactly what makes the chain so appealing (as other news sources will tell you, this chain is effectively a character in its own right), but instead we’ll skip ahead to the good stuff: how you can replicate the look yourself.
Turns out, it’s really easy. Simply select a necklace – if you want to mimic Connell, we recommend one that is fairly short so that it just encircles your neck without hanging down too far onto your chest – put it on, and forget about it. It truly goes with everything: a football kit, a secondary-school uniform, a simple T-shirt and jeans, sweatpants (which, let’s be honest, is about all we’re wearing right now). And when we all get used to actually getting dressed again, it’ll look especially good with a chore jacket or even smarter summer fare, such as a linen shirt.
The most important thing is that you wear it with quiet confidence and a certain nonchalance. Just think: what would Connell do? No need to call to much attention to the chain – what makes it so appealing is that it’s a discreet piece of flair that signals that you have a little jazz and excitement deep down, even if you’re not shouting about it. After all, its original owner doesn’t pay it much mind at all, but look at the cultural impact it’s having.
Go on, join the zeitgeist and get yourself a chain. It’s the missing link your outfit has been crying out for.
