The most satisfying part of this slightly surreal Betwixmas period is not the leftovers, nor the lie-ins. It’s not even the sales (although do check out our Sale). Rather, it is the end-of-year lists that start rolling in, allowing us to take stock of the past 12 months and summarise them in a neat and tidy fashion. We are getting in on the fun with our rundowns of the best culture bits that 2022 gifted us, but, being purveyors of menswear first and foremost, it is always this final best-dressed whopper that we are most excited to share. And so, we present the seven noteworthy men whose style stood out this year.

Mr Oscar Isaac

Sometimes, you just need a grown-up. That’s the energy Mr Oscar Isaac brought to the table this year: an unforced but unpredictable approach to style, worn with the confidence that comes with maturity. Isaac consistently eschewed the slightly-too-tight-suit-and-a-rollneck clichés of so many Hollywood actors and opted instead for a sprightly bow tie at the Sag awards or relaxed tailoring at a spring screening of his HBO series Scenes From A Marriage. His most memorable look was the pleated Thom Browne skirt he wore to the Moon Knight premiere in March. It spawned a zillion think-pieces and just as many lustful tweets. Who knew a few inches of unshaven calf could cause such consternation?

Tyler, The Creator

Add Tyler, the Trendsetter to the list of names the world’s best-dressed rapper goes by. Because while the recent Ivy style revival – the reason why loafers, casual ties and sweater vests suddenly appear to be the all the rage – can be chalked down to myriad influences, there is one man who has been its most enduring champion. Never one to be predictable, the music provocateur turned polymath has slowly embraced a more muted take on his signature preppy-skater look, swapping the candy pinks and blues of his Igor era for luxurious chocolate browns, off-whites and a frankly unprecedented outfit of head-to-toe black that somehow still oozed individuality. Where most celebrities typically rely on stylists before they step out to be photographed – and more power to them – we are continually impressed by how each Creator creation is so obviously his own.

Mr Paul Mescal

The internet’s most famous boyfriend from 2020, Mr Paul Mescal is now all grown up, yet still delightfully boyish. From a slightly oversized Prada suit at the Governors Awards to Dior in Edinburgh, he has nailed double-breasted tailoring (with a little help from the stylist Ms Felicity Kay). Our favourite look may have been from the Toronto Film Festival, which he attended to promote his latest venture, Aftersun. Pleat-front, generously draped trousers in an earthy hue, paired with an unbuttoned camp-collar shirt with a white tank underneath? May we all be so good at dressing up and dressing down in 2023.

Mr Dominic Fike

The American actor, singer and songwriter Mr Dominic Fike has been on our radar all year, and for good reason. Since his appearance in the second season of the racy teen drama Euphoria, in which he plays Rue’s mysterious friend Elliot, not only has the 27-year-old proved that he doesn’t need a loud two-piece to make a style statement (he can leave that to his hairdo), he has also skilfully demonstrated the enduring allure of an all-black ensemble, whether it’s a casual vinyl bomber jacket or a velvet suit over an unbuttoned shirt. In his own words, Fike is ready to get really, really famous. He is now on a North and South American tour until early 2023. If there is anyone to whom we could apply the “dress for the job you want” adage to, it would surely be him.

Mr Jeremy O Harris

The playwright Mr Jeremy O Harris knows how to play it cool. He knows how to turn up and turn out. He understands and he embodies his outfit’s vision by effortlessly staying true to himself and his style – and for that reason he is one of our best-dressed men of the year. From a simple black-tie silhouette at the Venice Film Festival to the grass-green two-piece from the adidas x Gucci collaboration, he always gracefully owns the carpet. And with his trademark details – the rich-old-lady handbags (big and small), the brogues, the shawl lapels, his nonchalant aura – he has created a signature look that is easily identifiable, but never dull.

Having featured on MR PORTER this year, there is a sense that the singer and actor Mr Joe Jonas has finally made it. Oh, who are we trying to kid? He’d done all right for himself before we got anywhere near him, but then having a bit of fun was integral to the way the Jonas brother dressed in 2022 and why his style shone through. September was an especially strong month in an especially strong year. The three looks above are pulled from his promotional duties around the launch of the Korean War film Devotion, in which he had a supporting role. As we noted at the time, he was fourth on the call sheet for the movie, but the printed, cropped jacket he wore to New York Fashion Week radiated main-character energy.

Mr Andrew Garfield

Mr Andrew Garfield’s recent roles in Tick, Tick... Boom!, The Eyes Of Tammy Faye and Under The Banner Of Heaven have placed him in the past, from the 1970s through to the 1990s. And he appears to have carried the best styles from those decades into his modern-day wardrobe. The Oscar-nominated actor hit this year’s red carpets in a range of sleek tailoring that had just enough points of interest to be unconventional and cool. From a Gucci velvet number to black pinstripes from SAINT LAURENT and a retro-inspired ensemble by Valentino, Garfield brought plenty of big fit energy to his 2022 looks, opting for roomy silhouettes and unexpected colours. Here’s hoping the adventurous streak continues in the new year.
