THE JOURNAL

Over the next two weeks, we’re going to be celebrating our luxury watch offering, as some of the most hotly-anticipated launches of the year are arriving at MR PORTER. And we thought we’d kick off this special dose of watch coverage with something a little different.
Rather than focusing solely on the timepieces, as we will do in depth later in the week, here we’re taking a step back and examining them in the context of a complete outfit. Why? Because, while mechanical watches are wonderful things to behold, to discuss, to analyse and to pore over – not to mention handy devices for keeping track of the time – it would be remiss of us to ignore that they are also, like clothes, tools for expressing our sense of style.
This is a fact borne out by the sheer variety of watches available to buy right now: contrast the burly tool watches of Panerai to the slim, minimalist dress watches of Piaget, or the unapologetically bold Roger Dubuis to the classically handsome Vacheron Constantin. Again, as with clothes, the market is designed to accommodate a broad range of tastes, so whatever your personal preference – whether it’s sporty or dressy, bulky or slim, flamboyant or discreet – there is likely a watch out there to suit your style.
Rather than overwhelm you with choice, today, we’re focusing on just one category of watches. Or, to be more accurate, one colour. In recent years, the blue watch has gone from novel alternative to core collection staple – barely a model or style is launched without a blue version, and some, such as the IWC SCHAFFHAUSEN below, really go to town.
Blue is often described as the safest colour in a man’s wardrobe for clothes, but isn’t always the easiest to style effectively on the wrist. So, with that in mind, we’ve hand-picked five different watches that all feature blue in some way and in each case assembled an outfit to complement it perfectly.
01. THE NEW FORMAL
Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Moon
Those looking for a clean, classically proportioned watch will find few better options than Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Master collection, perhaps the most understated range from what is already one of Switzerland’s more understated watchmakers. This version, the Ref Q1368480, is distinguished by its midnight-blue dial and elegant, circular date and moon-phase indicator at six o’clock. In years gone by, it would have been your archetypal “dress watch”, the one you slip under the cuff of your tuxedo shirt at formal events. But given such occasions are so few and far between these days, it seems a shame to leave this one in the drawer, especially when it works so well as part of an everyday outfit such as this. Continuing the blue theme established by the watch face is a cotton suit by the family-run Italian tailors Canali and a merino-wool polo shirt from Mr P., while a pair of black leather sneakers from Common Projects echoes the material of the watch strap.
02. HIGH-END WEEKEND
Piaget Polo Skeleton
Just as Mr Ralph Lauren named his fashion label Polo Ralph Lauren, in order to evoke the high-society glamour of the sport, so Piaget’s Polo range is designed to appeal to a certain kind of watch customer. A steel sports watch straight out of the 1980s, the Piaget Polo is a decidedly more casual proposition than the ultra-thin dress watches of the brand’s Altiplano range, but nonetheless retains a certain elegance thanks to its slim profile and distinctive cushion-shaped case. And this version, the Ref G0A46010, with its diamond-encrusted, 18-karat white gold “skeletonised” case, one of the hallmarks of haute horlogerie, is especially smart, making it a good match for the outfit we’ve chosen here. It’s a no-fuss weekend look – sweater, jacket, jeans and boots – elevated to something rather special by super-luxe designers Brunello Cucinelli, John Lobb and Loro Piana.
03. THE MODERN CLASSIC
IWC SCHAFFHAUSEN Laureus Sport for Good Pilot’s
IWC’s Pilot’s watch is fast becoming something of a modern classic. Yes, we appreciate that it was originally designed in the 1930s, so it’s a bit of a stretch to call it “modern”. But through a gradual process of design iteration – it’s on Mark XVIII now – and a steady stream of new colours and materials, which are introduced into the collection by way of special editions or partnerships, it has evolved into a watch that feels wholly contemporary while remaining true to the military design language of its forebears. This version, part of IWC’s long-standing collaboration with the Laureus Sport For Good foundation, is the first to feature a blue ceramic case, which matches well with the blue dial – a Laureus standard – and blue webbing strap. This theme of “updated classics” is echoed throughout the rest of the outfit with TOM FORD’s take on a denim jacket, which comes in chambray instead of denim, and Bottega Veneta’s chunky-soled Chelsea boots.
04. LAID-BACK LUXURY
Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar

The Overseas, Vacheron Constantin’s take on the popular steel sports watch category, does everything a steel sports watch ought to, combining high-end watchmaking and premium materials with the kind of sporty appearance that looks just as good with a suit as it does with sweats. We’ve opted for the latter here, but take note: these are no ordinary sweats. Coming courtesy of Italian luxury powerhouse Ermenegildo Zegna and tailored from a luxurious blend of silk and cotton, they’ll stand up to being worn with the finest of watches. Which is just as well, because this version of Vacheron’s Overseas, with a perpetual calendar and an 18-karat white-gold case and bracelet, is about as fine as they get.
05. GOING “OUT OUT”
Roger Dubuis Excalibur
As Roger Dubuis is keen to make clear, its horological creations bear more in common with supercars than they do your average watch. And, here’s the thing: they’re not entirely wrong. Ignore for a moment the more obvious points of comparison, the partnerships with automotive brands such as Pirelli and Lamborghini, for instance, or the liberal use of carbon fibre. What really makes this whole “supercar for your wrist” thing more than just a clever piece of marketing is the fact that, just like supercars, Roger Dubuis’ watches are spectacularly over-engineered. In a good way, of course. Not just that, but they’re also guaranteed to get you noticed. This, the Ref DBEX0838 from the Excalibur collection, features watchmaking wizardry in the form of a flying tourbillon, while the case is milled from a proprietary scratch-resistant metal, the pithily named “CarTech Micro-Melt BioDur CCMTM”. At 42mm, it’s not for wallflowers, so we’ve made it the centrepiece of an equally audacious outfit, which also stars a snazzy leopard-print shirt from SAINT LAURENT and leather Derby shoes from Prada.
