Enjoy a morning coffee in the cosy lounge area at Gravetye Manor, West Sussex
Jump in the new Audi A8 and make a trip to Gravetye Manor.
Inspired by the new Audi A8, we at MR PORTER are planning some weekend getaways from our HQ in London to put this innovative new model through its paces (in particular, its nifty navigation system, accessed via an intuitive haptic screen). So, where to go? While heading towards the English Channel might usually signal a trip over to France, you could do a lot worse than a stay in West Sussex – known for its stately homes, dramatic scenery and impressive coastline. It’s also officially the sunniest county in the UK, according to the Met Office.
The drive
More than half the county is protected countryside, so expect picturesque driving opportunities on winding, and at times unforgiving, country roads. Given the drive is less than two hours from London, via the A24, there is little excuse not to experience it. And even less of an excuse, if you’re doing so in the sporty new Audi A8
Where to stay
Just 25 minutes in the car from Gatwick Airport is Gravetye Manor, which was originally built in 1598. Located in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – just south of East Grinstead – it is pleasingly nestled among sandstone outcrops and meadows. On either side you are surrounding by open water – perfect, if the weather’s warm enough, for a swim. If you’re more horticulturally minded, visit in springtime to enjoy the surrounding gardens, which boast no less than 7,000 species of tulips (along with ink magnolia trees, an apple orchard and a fruit and vegetable garden.) Indeed, the main pull of Gravetye Manor is its traditional beauty. You won’t find a gym or a luxury spa here.
What to eat
The restaurant at Gravety has a much-coveted Michelin star and is run by head chef Mr George Blogg – who is particularly proud of his breakfasts – expect homegrown strawberries, and the finest local sausages and black pudding. For dinner (if it’s on the menu) don’t miss out on the miso-glazed scallops. If you want to venture out – the nearby Cat Inn serves fine pub fare.
What to do
Known for its nature, zoos, and castles – there are plenty of wholesome pursuits a drive away from Gravetye Manor. Take the B2110 for about an hour and you’ll reach Chichester Cathedral, which was founded in 1075. But, if Norman architecture isn’t your thing, hop back in your new Audi A8 and head north for a little while and explore South Downs National Park. If you’re not feeling so adventurous, less than a mile from Gravetye Manor is English wine producer Kingscote Estate – set in a pretty valley alongside the Bluebell Railway. Alternatively, if you need something a little more exciting – skip all of the above and drive just three miles to Southern Pursuits where you can indulge in all manner of outdoor activities.
