THE JOURNAL

For those of you who don’t reside in Australia, thoroughbred racing is kind of a big deal Down Under. The topic even has its own Wikipedia page, which will tell you that the country has more racecourses than any other and that the most important races – the flagship being The Melbourne Cup, which this year is held on Tuesday 5 November – attract as many as 100,000 spectators. Just like Ascot, Epsom and Goodwood in Britain, attending the races is also an occasion to dress to impress. So, to give you plenty of time to settle on your suit, we’ve put together a handy guide on how to do just that. You’re under starter’s orders…
Keep It Light

Pastels work perfectly if you’ve bagged yourself a ticket to the Melbourne Cup – the dress code requires men wear suits and ties but, unofficially, it’s also become customary to don colour. This powdery lilac two-piece from Gabriela Hearst’s first men’s collection fits the bill and, bonus, it’ll transform the wearer into a modern-day Gatsby-type. The rose-toned silk-twill tie, courtesy of Turnbull & Asser, is the perfect accompaniment thanks to the subtle but sophisticated smattering of embroidery.
Try Blue On Blue

This well-fitting suit from French tailor extraordinaire Husbands is every bit as smart as your workaday navy, but just a tad more seasonally appropriate. The lightweight linen construction is also a big plus, reducing the likelihood of overheating if it’s a scorcher of day (which, let’s face it, it most certainly will be). Here, it’s the accessories that make a real difference. A deep navy necktie cranks the formality up a notch, while the pocket square (which, importantly, complements rather than coordinates with the tie) adds some dapper verve.
Don't Forget The Rest

As one of the most formal events of the social calendar (barring black tie dos), racing season is an opportunity to really go all out. In other words, don’t be afraid to experiment with accessories. A Panama hat, besides being a practical option while you’re outside in the springtime sun, will add a certain old-timey flair to a smart ensemble. A metal watch, too, is a timelessly elegant addition – just be sure to match it to the silver or gold of your jewellery, cufflinks or tie bars.
