THE JOURNAL

What to listen to as the weather heats up.
Hey guys, it’s summer! Are you ready to get ripped and show off that six pack? Me too! Sort of. The trouble is, mine went missing years ago. It’s buried deep within the whale blubber that has since become my body. So, in an attempt to resuscitate my buffed-up beach dreams and locate my missing muscles, I recently re-joined the gym. There’s a big problem though: the music.
No matter which fitness centre I tried, my ears were assaulted with Euro-pop trance remixes of Mr Ed Sheeran and Ms Zara Larsson. This omni-present, potent strain of sub-Tropical house is really scuppering my Adonis ambitions. And even if I block out those oh-so-catchy-marimba-synth-melodies with wireless headphones, I’m still confronted with their music videos. Trust me, there’s nothing more soul-sapping than watching sexy models gyrate in HD while you pound away on the Wattbike.
But don’t fear, reader, I have a plan. I’m going to burn my gym membership card on the BBQ. Then I’m going to hit the park and play the following 30 songs on loop while doing planks in my boxers. Within a few weeks I’ll either be fitter than Mr Charlie Hunnam or on the Neighbourhood Watch list. It’s a risk I’m willing to take to avoid the horrors of the gym sound system. Wish me luck.
However you choose to listen to this playlist, be it on the treadmill, by the pool, on your way to a festival, or in your office, there’s no doubt that these tracks will get you in a sunny mood. And to make sure your brain is as finely tuned as your newly bronzed physique, here’s a quick primer guide to three of our favourite featured artists. You’ll be hearing a lot more from them in the summers to come.
MURA MASA
A large market for tropical trap house seems to be developing in the wake of Mr Calvin Harris’s “Slide”, which has been streamed over 200 million times on Spotify. This is good news for guys who say they love Migos but really listen to Little Mix. Twenty-one year old British producer Mura Masa is leading the charge into this new brave new world, collaborating with Charli XCX as well as Stormzy and Desiigner. Who knew a boy from Guernsey could be so gully?
JARAMI
Rising to prominence earlier this year thanks to their work with Mr Frank Ocean on “Chanel”, “Lens” and “Biking”, Swedish duo Jarami are on track to be 2017’s breakout producers. Their solo work draws heavily on the LA beat scene, with jazzy chord changes and blissed out vibes aplenty. Also look out for their collaborations with Ms Janet Jackson, AlunaGeorge and Mr Kanye West’s pal Gizzle.
MR TOM MISCH
Multi-instrumentalist Mr Tom Misch began making waves in the underground with his J Dilla-inspired beat tapes. But it’s his woozy collaboration with fellow south Londoner Novelist that is starting to get his music championed in wider circles. Taken from the 21-year-old’s 5 Day Mischon EP, it’s the perfect daydreaming soundtrack to put on during a heatwave. So let’s hope we have one soon…
