From bowl cuts to twisted afros, there’s a new do for every head this season.
Now that we’re over a month into 2019, the idea of refreshing your wardrobe has likely crossed your mind by now, whether by experimenting with small clothing updates, or vowing to be more environmentally conscious. But it’s time to switch gears and talk about grooming. Specifically, hair. To follow through with that “new year, new me” mentality, now’s a good time as any to test out a new haircut. And luckily, from what we’ve seen on the red carpet and the menswear runways, there’s a bevy of fresh styles to consider.
Depending on your hair type (fine, thick, curly, flat, wavy), there’s something out there to try. Yes, the choices can be overwhelming but fear not, MR PORTER asked Losi (yes, like Naomi or Britney, no last name is needed), a celebrity groomer and men’s stylist at the Martial Vivot salon in New York City, to weigh in on five of the freshest cuts of the moment and, more importantly, how to make them work for your hair.
01. The Bowl Cut (Yes, Really)

Granted, this one’s certainly not for the wallflower, but bowl cuts are having a major moment both on the red carpet and the runways. Last year, Mr Timothée Chalamet lopped his chin-length hair into a choppy bowl cut to film upcoming Netflix series The King. A little medieval to be sure, but by no means unfashionable. Still, we think the best poster boys for this look were seen recently at the AW19 menswear shows, where a number of models were seen sporting blunt bowl cuts at Mr Hedi Slimane’s Celine show.
Get the look: “This style is easy to maintain as the bangs could be any length from just below the hairline to below the eyebrows,” says Losi. “The straighter the hair the better, but this look is achievable with curly hair as well, you would just need a blow dryer and a brush.” Losi suggests using a mixture of styling cream and gel on damp hair, and then blow-drying. “Use a brush for a rounder, softer look, or blow-dry hair straight down without a brush for a flat look,” she says.

02. The Tight, Twisted ’Fro

Some of Hollywood’s sleekest gents have been sporting modified ’fros. Think of it like the traditional Afro, but with a tighter, more controlled finish and the ends twisted into neat pieces. Some seriously stylish stars, from Messrs Donald Glover and Chadwick Boseman to Jay-Z, have been showing how it’s done as of late. The best part? It looks killer with basically everything you wear, from a T-shirt and jeans to a tux.
Get the look: Losi maintains the style is easier to achieve than one may think. “You can do this one sitting in front of a TV,” she says. “Lightly dampen hair with a nourishing conditioner, then use a little paste on your fingers. Go all around your head and take sections and twist away.” Losi also says if you want the pieces to have more of a sheen to them – perhaps for evening – you can rub something such as beard oil into the hands, then lightly brush over the twists.

03. The Bleached Buzzcut

There’s something undeniably neat and classic about a close-cropped buzz, but the new year’s take comes with some unexpected edge, as seen in a rather wild iteration on the Versace AW19 runway and on musicians such as Mr Zayn Malik – a bleached buzz makes for a more graphic update. Sure, it requires almost monthly touch-ups but the end result is wholeheartedly cool and will be sure to turn heads (in a good way).
Get the look: “This is one of the easiest to style because it will do whatever you want,” Losi says. “Just use a little styling cream, nothing too strong so it doesn’t get sticky. Make sure to replace the moisture in the hair that was lost during the bleaching process.” Losi suggests using a moisturising shampoo and conditioner that will replenish the hair and keep it strong until the next bleaching process.

04. Long and luscious

Long-haired men such as Messrs Adam Driver and Jared Leto have this style down to a point that’s pretty badass and rock star-worthy. There’s not one specific length to try in the new year, if you’re considering growing the hair out – it all depends on face shape and personal preference. However, the key takeaway is to ensure healthy locks, and to schedule in regular trims to banish split ends and promote hair growth.
Get the look: “Having long hair means letting go,” Losi says. “Mix some hair cream and gel in your hands and apply to towel-dried hair. Comb through and either blow-dry or let it dry naturally. When it’s dry, you can use a little bit of paste for containment. This would also work for chin-length textured hair.”

05. The Textured Fringe

This style works best for those with curly, textured, or unruly hair types. But there can be beauty in all of that chaos. Like stars such as Messrs Troye Sivan and Ezra Miller, the long, messy fringe works – and looks super current – because they’ve kept the back and sides short and neat. It’s also relatively low maintenance: only the top needs to be styled carefully. The end result is a cut that gives off an effortlessly cool vibe. High impact, minimum effort.
Get the look: “This is a great cut and style for curly, wavy and straight hair,” Losi says. “The haircut is key, it’s textured hair with form, tousled all over with clean lines. It’s easy to maintain – a little hair paste should do the trick.” Depending on hair type, hair can be air-dried (curly or wavy), or blow-dried to give extra volume (straight).
