Six Grooming Essentials For Your Summer Vacation

grooming routine on vacation isn’t the same as a grooming routine at home. For starters, it’s probably helpful if its slightly leaner than your everyday approach – there are certain members of the MR PORTER editorial team who would struggle to get through customs with their daily routines – and one editor allegedly took three (!) product-packed washbags with him on holiday last month. But it’s also important that you also have things to protect yourself. A day on the beach might give you a glow, but it can also wreak havoc with your skin and hair. With that in mind, here are six holiday-appropriate grooming products you should consider taking with you this summer.

Non-negotiable, a good SPF should be the first thing you pack for your holiday after your passport and swim shortsSoleil Toujours makes sunscreen that is organic, and is kind to your skin and the environment. The fine mist will leave your skin with that sheen that just looks good in the sun.

Woah there, you didn’t think you’d get away with just putting sunscreen on your body, did you? While you can spray a body SPF on your face, you’d be much wiser to use one especially formulated for the purpose (sun-induced wrinkles are real). This is by Hampton Sun – it’s a rich concoction of ingredients that protect you from the sun and nourish your skin, but it sinks in easily and won’t leave you looking greasy.

Smelling good isn’t just for when you’re dressed up. Diptyque’s Tam Dao eau de toilette is a brilliantly bright fragrance great for summer that is layered with warm notes of cedar, amber, and Brazilian rosewood – the perfect thing to make your signature scent for a holiday.

It’s not just your skin that will feel the harsh effects of the sun: your hair, too, will likely be drier and bristlier than normal. While this might give a good salt-spray effect in the short term, it’s a good idea to protect it as well. Sachajuan’s leave-in conditioner will revive damaged and stressed hair, and has the brand’s sea algae-derived ocean technology, which means it’ll be right at home on the beach.

Spending hours sweating in the sun means that you’ll likely be craving a clean face when it’s time to leave the beach or pool. SK-II’s cleanser will gently remove impurities, soothe skin and balance sebum levels to stop you looking too shiny after a day in the sun.

One thing your skin will need after a few days in hot weather is some moisture, as it’s likely drier than normal from any salt, sand or chlorine that you’ve come in contact with. Use Erno Lazslo’s Hydra-Therapy Memory Sleep Mask, which contains omega-rich kelp to soothe skin and prickly pear extract to moisturise. If you can keep it in the fridge in your hotel room, even better.
