What to wear when you own a classic car – without going too Toad of Toad Hall.
A key benefit of having so many social media followers is that we receive hundreds of style queries of myriad subject matter. But, we must admit, we have never, to our knowledge, been asked to pair clothes with a Porsche. This week, however, we do just that after an Instagram user wrote in about his dilemma regarding his garms and his garage. Find out, below, how to dress if you are lucky enough to own a classic car.

What’s the best outfit idea for a guy that drives a vintage Porsche 911T?

Well, Mr Russell, we do not often get questions from men who want to match their clothes with their car. But, given the sheer brazenness of your query, we thought we would step up to the plate and attempt an answer. We must admit, we wondered whether you were being sincere. But, after a bit of super sleuthing (which involved clicking on your Instagram page), we can see that you seem to be very serious about car ownership – posing as you are in your profile picture with something that appears to be a car – Porsche, vintage, or otherwise.
Now, to the matter of clothing. We mentioned that we thought you were rather bold to discuss your car. So it might be tempting to approach your attire in a similar fashion. However, we are not talking about a red Ferrari here. You are not driving a yellow Lamborghini. A vintage Porsche is a more considered, classic choice. You are clearly a man who has a taste for the traditional, rather than the brash.
So, when you’re next out for a drive, may we suggest you pull on something a little more smart and sophisticated. These drawstring wool trousers with the Prince of Wales check are contemporary, yet will speak to your traditional sensibilities and inject a bit of pomp to proceedings (without going down the tweed Toad of Toad Hall route). Next up, a simple, classic white shirt. This Oxford by AMI is more casual, with a nice detail on the breast, which will avoid your outfit becoming stuffy. You could of course go with a white T-shirt if you think things are getting a little too formal. You can shop which one you like best, here.
Now – your feet. What else to grace the pedals of your Porsche other than driving shoes? And what other brand but Tod’s? We suggest this pair, as they are understated and won’t battle for attention with your trousers.
Finally, to deal with any glare at the wheel, you’ll need a decent pair of sunglasses. These by Jacques Marie Mage have a vintage feel without being too retro.
