Five Hat, Gloves and Scarf Combos That Are Guaranteed To Keep You Warm, Whatever Your Style

Hats, gloves and scarves might just be the most underrated items in our wardrobes. Past October, big-ticket items such as coats and knitwear get all the headlines, but it’s actually those small winter warmers that put in the work. Aside from having the earnest job of keeping us warm when temperatures plummet, these accessories have the power to make or break an outfit, too – they can add some texture to your look, a dash of colour to otherwise neutral layers, or both.
Judging by the office style at MR PORTER’s London HQ, winter will come around in no time. So, to prepare you for the coming months, we’ve put together five of our favourite hat-glove-and-scarf combinations, whatever your style. Read on.

The neutral combo

If you wish to pack a stylish punch but still keep your layers on the neutral side of things, opt for Gucci’s vintage-inspired beret, which is relatively simple in design, save for the gold-tone GG logo appliqué. Pair it with Bottega Veneta’s leather gloves – embossed with the brand’s low-key triangular emblem – and a checked scarf. We suggest Acne Studios’ version, whose tonal brown and black colours will work with pretty much anything in your existing wardrobe.

The comfort-is-king set

Few fabrics feel more luxurious than cashmere, and its yarns do an excellent job at keeping you toasty, too. Pair The Elder Statesman’s ribbed beanie with something just as comfortable – Johnstons of Elgin’s fuss-free cashmere gloves if you’re feeling low-key or Story Mfg.’s padded scarf if you’re feeling adventurous (the latter is patchworked from different scraps of surplus fabric).

The textural trio

Accessories are the easiest way to inject a point of textural or visual interest into your look, and this trio courtesy of Chamula, Off-White and And Wander does just that. Start from the beanie, a Fair Isle style knitted from wool and topped with a fluffy bobble, then add a contrasting scarf (made from shell, quilted, padded and printed with the brand’s moniker in bold lettering) Last but not least, the fuzzy gloves – the Polartec® fleece they’re made from will protect you from the elements on all your outdoor adventures.

The geometrical pairing

According to fabric expert Loro Piana, a geometrical pattern is all you need to add a touch of colour to your winter outfit. Style out its Mongolian cashmere scarf with an equally well-made beanie (The Row’s grey one is an evergreen choice) and gloves. We recommend Paul Smith’s, which are made from supple leather and lined in ribbed wool for extra warmth.

The smarter edit

If you’ve asked yourself whether you can accessorise a suit with a beanie, a scarf or gloves before (we definitely have), you’ll be pleased to hear that the answer is yes. You just need to pick the right ones. Think neutral colours, not-too-loud silhouettes – A Kind of Guise’s merino wool and cashmere beanie, for instance, or Mr P.’s scarf, whose navy and beige checks makes it as timeless as it is versatile. What about gloves? Hestra’s pair has been made by hand with top stitching and a cosy shearling lining.
