Why You Need A Zip-Up Sweater This Autumn

If you buy only one thing for the new season, make sure it’s a track jacket.

OK, so “need” is probably too strong a word when we’re talking about a burgundy track jacket with a flaming arrow embroidered on the front. Maybe it’s more sensible to file all these under “nice to have”, or simply “want”. But why should you want one? Since the zip-up top received the fashion treatment via Burberry and Gucci last autumn, a slew of brands have cottoned on to the idea, meaning there now exists a range of attractive and stylish variations upon the zip-up-track-jacket archetype. What’s more, with the rise and rise of streetwear as 2017’s key style reference, these new arrivals have a somewhat tougher, less nostalgic feel to them. In short, the zip-up top has never been more relevant. Well, if you discount the entire 1970s. Scroll down for our favourite examples of this comfortable, versatile and stylish piece.

The simple styles offered by this Amsterdam-based skate brand have “cult” written all over them. Or rather, they might have, if, in its place, they didn’t already heavily feature the word “Pop”. Either way, you get what we mean. This is zeitgeisty skate style at its finest, as exemplified by this half-zip raglan sweater, which comes in a pleasingly 1990s teal colour. Wear it with a pair of knowingly retro-style basketball sneakers from Common Projects.

An understated and luxurious take on the track top, this Italian-made zip-up number from Bottega Veneta comes in a subtle and suitably autumnal palette of navy, burgundy and muted blue. This is about as grown-up as the whole look gets, so it’s best paired with something equally refined and simple, such as this off-white T-shirt from Tom Ford.

This style from Lanvin is knowingly, perhaps even gleefully retro (even down to the viscose fabric, which has a slightly more fluid, sporty feel than cotton), and has a particularly playful character, thanks to its sprightly (and aforementioned) chest motif. Wear it with something that little bit more serious, for a contrast. These cropped wool trousers from Dries Van Noten will do nicely.
