THE JOURNAL

Introducing one of winter’s outerwear trends that will last you a lifetime – it’s already been around since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution.
A good coat is something we believe no wardrobe should be without, but what about a great one? We’re not just talking about quality here: the “greatcoat” is actually a particular type of garment, a long, double-breasted overcoat that became popular around the time of the Industrial Revolution, and was traditionally issued by the armed forces. The charm of the greatcoat in the current era is simple:it provides enviable hardiness, maximum coverage, and makes you look like you’re thoroughly in charge. It’s also an item commonly found in thrift shops and army surplus stores, which keys in nicely to the nostalgic, thrown-together feel of many of AW17’s standout collections. In other words, if you’re in the market for a winter coat that makes a statement, this is a good place to start, and there are plenty of variations on the theme around at the moment. Scroll down for a few of our favourites.
The tailored classic
This Prince of Wales check coat from Italian brand Boglioli is more lightweight than your traditional variety, but looks no less elegant for it. It’s unlined for a more relaxed drape and the waterfall buttons on the cuffs (this means they overlap) are hand-stitched on to ensure the alignment is just so. It also feels wonderfully tactile, thanks to its boucle (meaning looped yarn) wool fabric. The kind of attention to detail on a coat like this means it’s better to resist pairing it with anything too casual; instead, refine the look further with a soft silk scarf, such as this reversible one from Ermenegildo Zegna.
The captain’s choice
It’s a modern myth that double-breasted coats work best on tall men – take Mr Gene Kelly for instance, who was 5ft 6in and cut an invariably dapper figure in one. If Singin’ In The Rain isn’t your thing and you’re still unconvinced, try this Balmain great coat; the long rows of golden buttons work to elongate the wearer’s frame, while its belt keeps the silhouette sharp and fitted. Finish it off with some polished black shoes – these handsome Chelsea boots from Saint Laurent will do nicely.
The vintage find
The shape of this wool and mohair-blend Gucci greatcoat – which looks like it has leapt straight from the rushes of a movie by Mr Wes Anderson – is has a particularly relaxed fit that looks at home whether dressed up or down, while its faux-shearling lining will ensure maximum cosiness at all times. It’s a more subtle way to wear Gucci’s otherwise bold offerings to be sure, but if you do want to channel Mr Alessandro Michele’s outré opulence, add a pop of colour by pairing it with one of the brand’s variegated sweaters. This charming jacquard one is exclusive to MR PORTER, and comes emblazoned with the insignia of a bumblebee.
