THE JOURNAL

So, you’ve invested in a beautiful navy blazer and now you want to get your money’s worth. Or you want to wear it every day because you love it so much, but you don’t want your colleagues to think you’re a one trick pony. Excellent, we here at MR PORTER are big fans of buying handsomely made, versatile closet staples that you can wear year after year no matter how your style shifts or what your calendar dictates.
If you’ve selected one of our classic blue jackets (well done), and are looking for ways to style them up – please, sir, see below.
01. Dress it down
This Incotex blazer is made from a cotton-cashmere twill blend and is unlined (and therefore also quite unstructured). This is a perfect candidate for a casual jeans and loafers look. Navy and white are a match made in heaven – you can’t go wrong with a button-down shirt worn over a striped T-shirt for a little Parisian flair.
02. Update the classic
Jumping on the double-breasted train? We don’t blame you. It’s a little bit trickier than a single-breasted suit, but when you nail it, it pays off. Don’t be afraid to wear it open, as we’ve styled this wool and cashmere jacket from Dunhill. Layered over a knitted polo shirt and lighter trousers (we like the high waist and pleats on this Purdey pair) brings this more classic style into a modern light.
03. Make a new suit
Don’t be afraid to play with similar colours when wearing a navy blazer. You can even pull on some suit trousers that don’t – gasp! – match your jacket. This TOM FORD cashmere blazer is about as basic (and luxurious) as they come, which is why it works well as an anchor for a creamy rollneck and pleat-fronted wool trousers. Worn with Derby shoes, this look goes from office to dinner date quite seamlessly.
