Three Ways To Wear The 1970s Trend

30 May 2018

The decade that style forgot? Here’s the right way to remember it.

When we look back at the history of menswear, the 1970s is a period of time filled with a hotchpotch of bold ideas. With the previous decade’s Summer of Love still fresh in the collective consciousness, the fashion that followed – in all its riotous colour – was also a bit of a free-for-all. Men took chances with what they wore, inspired by movie stars and musicians such as Sir Mick Jagger and Mr David Bowie who embraced a sense of fun and flamboyance in the way that they dressed.

Four decades on, and that defiant and subversive spirit seems more relevant than ever, so it’s no surprise that for the past few seasons a whole host of designers have nostalgically referenced one of menswear’s most exciting periods. What caught our attention at the most recent menswear shows were the looks that echoed and recast the best trends of that time: corduroy suits; roomy, yet refined plaid overcoats and suede jackets. Kaleidoscopic prints (which may have been tacky in Qiana nylon) take on a different character reworked in eye-pleasing hues on today’s silkier rayon shirts.

A little boho, a little preppy: when styled correctly, these 1970s trends are easy to incorporate into your wardrobe. What’s more, see this as an opportunity to add a little depth to your look through texture, interesting proportions and muted, earthy colours. Scroll down for three ways to wear the trend in a contemporary manner.

FOR THE WEEKEND

It seems that 1970s-inspired wide-leg trousers have fallen firmly into favour, with many men choosing to kick the skinny jeans into yesteryear. Wearing them well, however, is often a matter of judicious contrasts. For example, a shorter jacket such as this by Camoshita will balance out the proportions of your look. On your feet, try a pair of retro-inspired sneakers from Maison Margiela. Overall, it’s the earthy colour palette of this off-duty ensemble that makes a firm nod to the 1970s.

FOR SOMETHING SMART

All it takes to polish up a casual outfit is one strong, smarter piece, and Valstar’s suede jacket fits the bill. A cornerstone of Mr Steve McQueen’s wardrobe in the 1970s, bring yours into the 21st century by opting for a deep petrol shade, and layer it over Gucci’s floral 1970s wallpaper inspired printed shirt. Don’t go overboard, mind - a darker, subtle pair of trousers are your best friend. And for your footwear? Think brown, tan or suede Chelsea boots – a more sophisticated choice of leather shoe. Mr Harry Styles would be proud.

FOR A VACATION

Preparing for a holiday is the ideal time to invest in some clothes that you might not usually be accustomed to. Why not live a little? Far from the dress codes of the office and the judging eyes of your peers, you can let loose and be adventurous. A jazzy print shirt was something of a signature in the 1970s, and this floral piece from J.Crew will look suitably laid-back in the sun paired with shorts and a deep summer tan. If you’re in the city or heading out for the evening, try it with a pair of white jeans from our own label Mr P. and an Acne Studios indigo denim jacket. Canvas sneakers will bring help ground the look in the present.
