Three Ways To Wear A Camel Coat

Words by Mr Adam Welch

9 January 2017

A camel coat is a truly versatile wardrobe staple that will take you seamlessly from boardroom to bar.

These days the camel coat may only be tangentially linked to actual, real-life, scowling, spitting camels – most contemporary examples are made from wool, or cashmere, which is slightly softer to the touch than camel hair – but it’s just as stylish and versatile as it has always been. In fact, this beige-y brown investment piece works just as well with a suit as part of a smart, business-like ensemble as it does with jeans and even sweats (we must give a nod to Mr Kanye West for leading the pack on this front). But don’t take our word for it – scroll down for three ways to wear the same camel coat, a particularly resplendent example from Parisian brand Saint Laurent (we also like this new-season example from Kingsman).

FOR A MEETING

Wearing a camel coat with your suit exudes an air of Wall-Street confidence – if you want to google some examples, it’s a look that’s executed particularly well by Mr Stefano Tonchi, the editor-in-chief of W Magazine. Here, we’ve opted for a charcoal-coloured suit from Prada and a slightly off-white shirt, to complement the golden tones of the jacket. Unless you want to look very 1950s, it’s probably best to forgo the tie here, but if the situation is super-formal, we would recommend a simple black variety.

FOR THE OFFICE

For a smart but versatile look that will work as well in the boardroom as it will on your daily commute, throw your camel coat on over a zip-up top and wool trousers. As you can see in this outfit, the camel colour is rather neutral, and will work very well with any other kind of neutral colour such as grey, navy or black that you care to throw at it. A nice touch here is the Berluti Derbies. Embellished with a flash of brown rubber at the back of the sole, they are the perfect camel coat companions.

AT THE WEEKEND

There’s something particularly pleasing about juxtaposing the camel coat with contemporary casual- and sportswear. And even more so if you play up the contrast by wearing it with jeans that are well-washed and have a slightly worn-in look, such as this pair from Valentino. Add a sweatshirt and some minimal white sneakers (Berluti has created some superlative iterations of each for spring 2017) and there you have it – a relaxed, yet refined outfit for lazing around pubs, pootling around shops and generally having a nice old time of it once you clock off on Friday.
