Three New Wallets That Are Very Much On The Money

Invest in one of these colourful billfolds to make footing the bill a bit more fun.

You’d be forgiven for thinking a wallet is a purely functional thing, existing merely to hold credit and business cards. The natural urge is to keep it practical and inconspicuous, and of course to be chary about whipping it out all the time, lest you be asked to foot the bill for something. But we at MR PORTER hold a different belief – specifically, that an attractive wallet is a portable nugget of joy that is as much a part of a top-to-toe stylish look as your briefcase, tie, socks or cufflinks. Particularly if it comes in an eye-catching shade, as with the selection below, which, in our humble opinion, are particularly charming and colourful. Pick one of these, and prepare yourself for many “oohs” and “aahs” from your dining pals and favourite shop assistants.

THE DISTINGUISHED PATINA

Few brands can compare with Paris’ Berluti when it comes to imbuing leather with rich shades – they’ve been doing it since the 1890s, after all. The above wallet comes in the house’s trademark Venezia leather, which owes its subtle, transparent burgundy colour to a mineral tanning and polishing process which Berluti keeps as a closely guarded secret. Such depth of hue gives this handy billfold piece a distinguished air, making it the sort of thing you might slip into the chest pocket of a smart midnight-blue double-breasted suit. Invest in both and feel like the chairman of the board at your next lunch meeting.

THE STUDDED STAPLE

Currently a buzz brand thanks to the arrival of new creative director Mr Demna Gvasalia (also of Vetements), Balenciaga also has an enviable roster of returning favourites that are timeless in their slick futurism – this wallet being one of them. Attitudinal without being too flashy, and colourful without being garish, it’s a great choice for trend-seekers who want more of a contemporary character to their accessories. The bright blue shade will work particularly well with this Acne Studios bomber jacket, but also makes it that little bit more difficult to lose – always helpful in an item that contains pretty much your entire life.

THE TEXTURED TREASURE

Under the creative direction of London’s foremost curveball-thrower, Mr JW Anderson, Spanish leather specialist Loewe has become a purveyor of appealing off-kilter clothes and accessories in the past few years. Key to the whole aesthetic is a somewhat ruffled, charmingly seaside-y feel which is very much channelled by this ocean-blue wallet, with its weathered, organic-feeling textured surface. It’s a weekend wallet, certainly, but hey, maybe you’re a weekend kind of guy. Take it to the beach with a light shell jacket from British brand Folk, and be a sport and buy everyone an ice cream.
