THE JOURNAL

As the second season of the drug-fuelled series lands on Netflix, we round-up the strongest looks from the new series – from the safari shirt to the brown suit.
For all of you out there who have been feeling a little bit iffy without a regular fix (or indeed, massive dose) of Netflix’s super-violent cocaine-fuelled drama Narcos over the past year, rejoice, because cold turkey time is over – season two launches today. If you haven’t previously indulged in this compulsive show (which The Telegraph dubbed “dangerously addictive”, proving that MR PORTER doesn’t have a total monopoly on lazy drug metaphors), now is as good a time as any to start. Starring Mr Wagner Moura as infamous cocaine baron Pablo Escobar and Messrs Boyd Holbrook (who spoke to MR PORTER in The Journal last year) and Pedro Pascal as the DEA agents dedicated to bringing him down, the series is a complex, labyrinthine and thrilling chronicle of Escobar’s astonishingly lucrative cocaine empire in the 1970s and 1980s. Which means that, as well as being full of stranger-than-fiction historical tidbits, it also has some rather radical outfits. Here’s what we’re set to learn, style-wise, from season two.
The Brown Suit Is The New Navy Suit

Looking for a suit that’s smart, but not too smart? Bored with navy, and exhausted by grey? Why not try brown? Yes, there’s a period, 1970s feel to the colour when applied to tailoring, but given that this decade has been at the forefront of designers minds for several seasons now, is this really a problem? If we were at all unconvinced previously, the above image has tipped the scales – Mr Pascal looks both smart and breezy in his light brown ensemble, despite the fact his character is desperately trying to think of a way to stop Mr Escobar making so much cash that he lights fires with it to keep warm.

The Leather Jacket is Never Out of Style

When style writers talk about “timeless” pieces, what do they mean? Timeless compared to the universe, or timeless compared to Pokémon Go? Here, it’s easy for us to be that little bit clearer: we can guarantee you that if you pick up a leather jacket like the above, you will want to wear it for a lot longer than the accompanying bushy moustache – which while lovely, is definitely more at home in the 1980s than in the 2010s. Make it last especially long by opting for a variation from a brand of the more classic and trend-averse variety. Something from Schott will do nicely.

Men of Action Need Safari Shirts

You can’t bust a drug lord in a neat, pale-blue button-down. No, when it comes to shirting, something both a little bolder and a bit more practical is required. Playing DEA Agent Peña, Mr Pascal opts for a safari shirt – that is, a variation enriched with fastened flap pockets on the chest and arm. Presumably, most people’s forthcoming adventures will have slightly less high-stakes involved than Mr Peña’s, but if you’re keen on the look, there’s some great safari-inspired styles in sturdy ripstop cotton currently available from outdoorsy brand Battenwear.

A Striped Polo Really Does Go With Anything

You knew you could wear it with chinos, or jeans, or even under a blazer. But were you aware that a neat, striped polo, especially of the slightly faded, retro variety like the above example, is such a versatile piece that it even looks sort of OK when worn with a bulletproof vest? We’re not, of course, suggesting that anyone goes out and replicates this look – that’s just asking for trouble – but it’s nonetheless food for thought. A nice bomber jacket is probably a safer bet.

A Bomber Jacket And Shirt Can Actually Work

Messrs Holbrook and Pascal’s costumes in this scene from Narcos are particularly brilliant for being so closely drawn from reality – in the early 1980s, even policemen wore Members Only jackets, it turns out. Google the original Mr Steve Murphy and you will quickly happen upon an archive photograph that proves it. However, we must also note that Mr Peña appears to have been given something of a style upgrade in his TV incarnation, receiving a leather bomber jacket instead of a turquoise shell suit, and wearing it with a loose, open-necked shirt. We wouldn’t normally put the two together, but here, it works, in a pleasingly retro way.
