Stone Island Shadow Project Is Here

Our pick of the Stone Island collaboration with Acronym, available to show now.

It’s funny how the perception of a particular brand can change almost overnight. What Mr Christopher Bailey did with Burberry springs to mind. A few years ago, if someone had mentioned Stone Island, or you were presented with its iconic compass patch insignia, you might have thought of football fans, who have long been drawn to the no-nonsense label. Now, however, you’re more likely to conjure up images of world-famous rappers, such as Mr Travis Scott. Stone Island is still associated with soccer, but nowadays Mr Pep Guardiola, the sophisticated face of the sport, proudly wears their sweaters.

What was the turning point? Drake, probably. His love of all things London – and the music genres the city produces, such as grime – is well known. A 2014 Instagram post of him wearing Stone Island and namechecking Top Boy only helped boost that opinion (and Stone Island’s sales).

If the brand feels English, or at least British, that’s probably because of the association with our football terraces and its popularity during 1990s Britpop. But it is very much Italian. Stone Island was founded in 1982 in Bologna by Mr Massimo Osti. Whatever your perception of the brand today, it has always focused on technical fabrics and functional design, and continues to do so. This is no more evident than in the pieces made for the Shadow Project, a collaboration with design duo Ms Michaela Sachenbacher and Mr Errolson Hugh, aka Acronym, to create fine, technical workwear.

To celebrate the label’s 10-year anniversary, we invested in some new Shadow Project pieces, some of which are below. Shop the whole collection here. Or browse our edit of Stone Island here.
