We’ve put together an edit of the most refined of suits and blazers. We’ve scoured the latest collections to source the best tailored trousers. And we’ve presented you with a selection of handcrafted shirts from some of our favourite brands. But if we’re taking the mantra “build your look from the ground up” literally, we also have to talk about shoes. Without further ado, here are the Oxfords, loafers and brogues you’ll need to take your formal looks to the next level.

01. The brown suede John Lobb Oxford shoes
If you’re looking for something that’ll stand the test of time – without ever going out of style – John Lobb should be your port of call. Combining elements from classic Oxford and brogue styles, this suede pair is made entirely by hand, and set on soles with an extra layer of rubber for added durability.

02. The glossed leather Brioni penny loafers

03. The leather Grenson wingtip brogues
Grenson’s brogues feel like a proper investment. Each pair of the brand’s shoes takes up to eight weeks to make and involves more than 200 individual operations. Made in the brand’s Northamptonshire workshop from its revived 11F last, they have tonal flat welts and longwing detailing that extends all the way along the sides.

04. The embellished leather Berluti penny loafers
Upon first inspection, Berluti’s loafers look like a classic pair. But look closely and you’ll notice the stylised “B”-shaped buckles, which are inspired by the staircase from the label’s Rue Marbeuf boutique in Paris. The supple leather will develop an even softer patina with wear.

05. The textbook leather George Cleverley Oxfords
When it comes to timeless formal shoes, nothing beats a true classic. Elevate any black, grey and navy suit with George Cleverley’s Charles Oxford shoes – they’re made in a soft black leather construction and finished with smart punched details.
