THE JOURNAL
What’s your shirt-to-T-shirt ratio? One shirt for every three T-shirts? Four? We wouldn’t be surprised if it was even higher than that. While the average guy has likely amassed enough T-shirts to pick out a different one for every day of the week and then some, most of us are sorely lacking when it comes to good casual shirts. And that’s a shame, if you ask us, because casual shirts can be a smart, versatile addition to your off-duty wardrobe. So, in order to address (and hopefully correct) this shortfall, we’ve picked out five of the best casual shirts from the latest Mr P. collection – that’s enough for a full working week. Keep on scrolling to check them out for yourself.
01. Monday
The retro knitted shirt
The open-weave crochet pattern technically makes this more of a short-sleeved cardigan than a shirt, but we’re not here to quibble over semantics. Of far greater importance is the way it looks, which we’d describe as “Sir Sean Connery-era James Bond on holiday”. (That’s a good thing.) Given the loose knit, we’d recommend wearing this one over a white T-shirt or tank top.
02. Tuesday
The pyjama shirt
The spread collar and the vertical stripes give this shirt a pyjama-like feel, and the softness of the Lyocell fabric – an exceptionally breathable material made from the pulp of eucalyptus wood – mean that you could probably sleep in it if you wanted to. Or, you could use it as the foundation of a mid-century Americana-inspired outfit. Just wear it over a white tee with pleated chinos and penny loafers.
03. Wednesday
The off-duty linen shirt
Nothing in the modern man’s wardrobe says “I am currently on annual leave with no access to emails” quite like a linen shirt. This one is garment-dyed, meaning that rather than using pre-dyed fabric, the dyeing process takes place after the shirt is cut and stitched. This leads to a softer, more natural finish – in this case, it imbues the shirt with a sort of rumpled elegance that compliments its off-duty style rather well.
04. Thursday
The seersucker shirt
A classic summer fabric, seersucker’s crinkled, puckered texture makes it a natural choice for lightweight tailoring, as it means that it won’t sit flat and cling to your skin. It’s put to great use here in this short-sleeved shirt, which is enlivened with an eye-catching gingham check print.
05. Friday
The going-out shirt
In recent years, short-sleeved shirts have become an acceptable canvas for some of our wildest and most colourful style experiments. This version leans into the jazzy-shirt trend with a painterly print of red and black noodly scribbles that dance across the white poplin-cotton background. It’s a great date-night choice.
