Basketball players are seemingly the most stylish people on the planet right now. We’re not sure exactly how it happened (maybe it’s because, like models, they’re so tall, but also, y’know, because of the “NBA Bubble”, they were the only ones allowed out). What is certain, the sport’s stars have been consistently turning it out in recent weeks – so much so that MR PORTER’s best-dressed list for January was made up exclusively of them.
The man who caught our eye this week, though, is Mr PJ Tucker. The Houston Rockets player, and MR PORTER’s Style Council member, is a notably snappy dresser. And when he arrived at the Wells Fargo Center for a game against the Philadelphia 76ers last week, looking typically fresh and sporting a gargantuan Louis Vuitton backpack, we took notice. It would be comically big were it not being worn by a man who stands almost 2m high.
What does a man need with a bag that large? Is he renting it out on Airbnb? A theory: it’s absolutely full of sneakers. It seems plausible, seeing as Mr Tucker is a notorious sneakerhead; according to The New York Times, his thousands-strong collection of sneakers is stored in four locations spread across the US, and he reportedly swaps his shoes up to three times during pre-game warmups so he can nail the perfect pair.
The second thing you need to know about Mr Tucker, after his sizeable sneaker collection, is that he wears more orange than a Buddhist monk. The athlete favours mandarin-coloured Nikes on the basketball court, is often pictured in a bright-orange fedora or beanie, and wore a full orange suit by Acne Studios to the 2019 NBA awards. Thus, he is an expert at orange coordination. Whereas you or I might wear an orange pair of socks and consider it daring, Mr Tucker weaves the colour through his entire outfit. Notice how the orange shoelaces match the puffer jacket, which offsets the wash bag, which brings out the orange clips on the briefcase. Genius.
This is the kind of god-tier styling that we live to document. It’s PJ Tucker’s giant backpack, we’re all just living in it.
