If writers in the comments section of various newspapers (not to mention the MR PORTER editorial team’s Slack channel) are to be believed, when The Current Situation calms down and we can attend parties, eat in restaurants and be seen in more than just our Zoom windows and Instagram Stories, people are going to start really dressing up again. We’re going to pull out all the stops, throw caution to the wind and use our sartorial choices to express a new-found sense of freedom and enthusiasm. Just as the roaring 1920s saw a period of cultural prosperity (and people getting looser with what they wore), we could be about to throw off our sweatpants and start a rebellion all of our own. And when that time comes, it’ll pay to be prepared.

There are few brands better placed to aid us than Gucci, the Italian designer well known for being a blend of forward-thinking fashion and old school glamour. We’re going to stick our neck out and say you may well have heard of this brand, which was founded in Florence in 1921. If so, you will be familiar with some of its signature designs – the green-red-green webbing stripe detail, for example, or the iconic GG Supreme logo.
As clothing enthusiasts, we have enjoyed the brand in its various iterations. More recently, current creative director Mr Alessandro Michele has dabbled in larger labels and logos, embracing maximalism, humour (“Guccy” designs and “FAKE” emblazoned accessories, for example) and outlandish fun. And it is in this spirit that we introduce a new selection of Gucci accessories and shoes available on MR PORTER – pieces with which you can express the bolder elements of your personality this spring.

The messenger bag has been given a much-needed upgrade by various designers in the last year, leading to a trend for more sophisticated versions of the tatty things we once used to cart around newspapers, schoolwork and flyers. Gucci have got in on the act, making unapologetic use of a raised retro-glamorous GG logo, so you can really stamp your authority on an outing this spring. There’s the logo-embossed leather black bag, or the rather more daring perforated-leather style in white. Not for the fainthearted, no, but we’re living a little.
Want to take things up a notch? We can’t think of a more maximalist, whimsical, no-holds-barred matrimony than Gucci and, er, Disney. Really. Name a more iconic duo. We can’t. The quintessential Italian luxury designer meets the House of Mouse? That’s why our eye has been drawn to the most striking example of this collaboration – a small backpack, monogrammed with the famous GG Supreme canvas, printed with a galactic scene involving Donald Duck and pals. Sounds like a dream? That’s the idea. If you want to buy into the fantasy in a more subtle way, go for the belt bag or the tote.

If we’re going to be out and about with abandon, then we’re going to need new kicks. Sneakers that are loud and proud. Which brings us to the old-school glamour of the Gucci Tennis 1977 monogrammed high-tops, pictured above. Making use of the iconic green and red stripes as well as the GG monogram, these sneakers – inspired by nostalgia for sportswear styles of that era – are made from washed denim and lined in plush terry, and they are hand-embroidered for a little added opulence.
All of this monogrammed Mickey Mouse maximalism is well and good, but what if you’re more of a traditional Gucci man? If so, you will be reassured to know that the brand hasn’t forsaken its classics. The Horsebit loafer is an iconic shoe synonymous with Gucci that has rarely been out of style since it was first created over 60 years ago. That longevity is down to Gucci’s willingness to play with and update its design: this latest version is backless, made with smooth black leather, and replete with a gold snaffle – elements which nod to Gucci’s craftsmanship and equestrian heritage. You could easily use these to loaf around the house, or slip them on to go to a ball. Perfect, then, for the times.
