THE JOURNAL

Few things are more exhilarating than one’s first flight of the season down a perfect, powdery piste. The heady rush of icy wind, the release of the cares of your quotidian life – these are things we look forward to every year. Though this year has been, well, not so great, skiing, snowboarding or whatever your snowy flavour of choice, is still – thankfully – on the menu. In fact, it might just be the only winter wonderland tradition that can carry on largely as it used to.
Which brings us to the latest Bogner collection, designed in collaboration with the one and only St Moritz. The partnership could not feel more natural – after all, Bogner has, since its inception in 1932, been a brand obsessed with the intersection of sport and style, and we would say the exact same thing for the mini city in the Alps. In fact, take a moment to close your eyes and imagine the sugary slopes and gingerbread roofs of the St Moritz resorts. Take a deep breath. Smells like wintry heaven – and do we catch a whiff of hot cocoa?
Of course, neither Bogner nor St Moritz are all style, no substance. In fact, the brand’s latest collection is heavy on tactical, technical details to make streaming down the slopes an Olympic-level experience.

Take, for example, the Felian ski jacket. It carries all the hallmarks of excellent ski gear: quilting, internal storm placket, pockets fashioned with reflector tape and a cosy, stand-up collar with a chin guard. Water-resistant and breathable, the cut is slim and the colourway is classic – neutral and black with a flash of orange – ensuring that even as you’re gliding down the slopes in any type of weather, you look sleek, stylish and an entirely modern man.
The thing about skiing, of course is that you want gear that will keep you warm and protected, without feeling bulky or weighed down. Bogner’s autumn/winter 2020 collection will provide the former without the latter. Each piece was designed with look and feel in mind. The ski trousers are lightweight, with a straight cut and are extremely breathable while also being snow- and moisture-resistant. Tucked under a parka and over boots, the silhouette is clean and unfussy – utilitarian yet striking at the same time.
But any skier worth his snow boots knows that warmth on the slopes comes down to their choice of base layer. Bogner’s functional moisture-wicking jersey pullovers might not be visible when you’re all layered up, but they’re stylish enough that when you strip down après-ski to enjoy a warming hot toddy, you can rest assured that you’ll look as good as you feel. Similarly, the Bogner mid-layers – stretchy wool zip-ups and slim lightweight puffer hybrids, allow you to stay out on the slopes for hours.
This is our way of granting you permission to start getting excited about ski season, to slip out of your sweats and into some high-tech, high-fashion sportswear. If there was ever a year when we craved the freedom of flying down a hill, this is it. See you in St Moritz.
