The Sneaker Drop: December’s New Shoes From New Balance, Converse And ON

Words by Mr Jim Merrett

6 December 2024

When you stop to think about it, stuffing sneakers into a stocking seems to be the wrong way to go about things. But then is there a better gift for the sneakerhead in your life? From the most advanced technical running shoes to luxe leisurewear and cult reissues in classic colourways, there’s something for everyone at MR PORTER this holiday season. Only, where to start? For the limited-edition drops sure to win the festive period, step this way.

990v4 “Brown” by New Balance x Auralee

Not much of a secret since this team-up was signposted in Auralee’s AW24 shows way back in January. However, given that the label’s sneaker collabs rarely surface outside of its native Japan, this is something to get excited about. And yet, rather than overly amped, this chosen palette is pleasingly subdued, or would be if not for the suggestive midsole wedge-toe detail in baby blue. The model itself is New Balance’s 990 update from 2016 (peak “dad shoe” era). And while your old man would appreciate receiving a pair, be sure to bank this collector’s piece for yourself, too.

990v4 “Blue” by New Balance x Auralee

The other half of the Auralee package presents potential purchasers with a poser. Which colourway to plump for? The blue accent shown here takes on a teal tone, blown up to envelop the entire upper. You might find yourself with a personal preference. But for those still mulling it over, given the rarity of this release, the obvious answer is a pair of each – while you can.

TURBOWPN “Oyster” by Converse x DRKSHDW

Somewhat overshadowed in the history books by a certain Nike sponsorship deal of the time, the Weapon was Converse’s late-1980s bid to reaffirm its former dominance over the basketball court. And on the feet of basketball legends Larry Bird and Earvin “Magic” Johnson, it was a massive technological step up from the iconic Chuck Taylor. Although Rick Owens’ recent reimagining has more of a Back To The Future: Part II feel to it. This latest edition features punchy white detailing alongside the dark lord’s signature bulbous silhouette and exaggerated tongue.

Cloudtilt “Lunar New Year” by ON

Even before the reworking at the behest of LOEWE creative director Jonathan Anderson, the Cloudtilt marked a departure for running upstart ON. For one, it was made for walking. This new edition of the core design shows that, once again, the Swiss technical brand is a step ahead, projecting beyond the upcoming holidays to Lunar New Year, with a luxe red and gold trim – although, as colourways go, it is also perfectly adaptable when it comes to the festive season.
