THE JOURNAL

As we continue the horror that is 2020, Halloween will look a bit different come 31 October – forget overdrinking en masse or trick-or-treaters at your front doors. But, that doesn’t mean we have to rule out other things, such as carving pumpkins and watching scary films. We thought we’d get a head start – not by attacking pumpkins with a knife, but by looking back at some horror movies to see which ones might provide some timely style advice. Below, we’ve listed five of the best menswear icons from horror films. Whether you take these looks as inspiration for your winter wardrobe, or costume ideas for Halloween, is entirely up to you.
01. Get Out (2017)

If you’ve seen Mr Jordan Peele’s directorial debut, Get Out, you will know that Mr Lakeith Stanfield’s character, Andre, is possessed by an old white man’s brain. His clothes, as well as his behaviour are, therefore, somewhat weird and unusual. That doesn’t mean we don’t like what we see. Here, Mr Stanfield is rocking a suburban beige linen blazer with mismatched off-white trousers, paired with a straw Panama hat, and we’re dying to copy it.

02. The Shining (1980)

Mr Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, loosely based on the novel by Mr Stephen King, is an iconic film with an iconic wardrobe. Its protagonist, Jack Torrance (Mr Jack Nicholson), sports a range of wintry layers. The black turtleneck pictured here is a no-brainer for your seasonal go-to, but an honorary nod also goes to the red corduroy Margaret Howell jacket over the checked shirt in the infamous “Heeere’s Johnny!” scene. The jacket was Mr Nicholson’s own, but he was adamant his character should wear it, so Mr Kubrick requested almost a dozen copies of it from Ms Howell for the film. The Shining has given us some pretty memorable cinematic moments, but Mr Nicholson's attire is up there with “redrum” and the twins.

03. Secret Window (2004)

Secret Window, another Mr King adaptation, induces an autumn nostalgia that parallels Ms Nora Ephron’s When Harry Met Sally… The neutral-coloured palette worn by Mort Rainey (Mr Johnny Depp) harmonises beautifully with the autumnal Upstate New York setting. The sublime layers and knits, in our eyes at least, could easily be part of our Mr P. collection. Here, Mort is pictured wearing layered blue shirts and a lush burgundy suede jacket. The casual, homey clothing almost makes us forget his murderous tendencies. Maybe that’s the point.

04. Velvet Buzzsaw (2019)

Velvet Buzzsaw, the satirical horror film about the art world being attacked by haunted paintings, has provided us with a wardrobe that is a work of art in itself. The costume designers, Mses Trish Summerville and Isis Mussenden, have truly captured the day-to-day style of the art community. Think monochrome, oversized poplin shirts and loose trousers. Mr Jake Gyllenhaal plays Morf Vandewalt, an art critic with an eclectic sense of style whose outfits steal the show. We are big fans of his square-framed TOM FORD glasses and the perfectly tailored suits he wears throughout the film.

05. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

Some may watch Freddy Krueger (Mr Robert Englund), a razor-handed serial killer, haunt his victims’ dreams and hide behind the couch, but we wonder where we can get hold of the sweater he’s wearing. The red and green-striped knit has inspired many Halloween costumes as well as two Nike sneaker collaborations. The Freddy Krueger Nike Air Max 95, which launched this month, was inspired by the sweater’s iconic stripes and includes a blood-red bubble on the soles. Complement Freddy’s statement knit with a pair of black corduroy trousers and a light utility jacket or overcoat and you’re set for autumn. Now you’re playing with power.
