THE JOURNAL

While those who were invited to attend Frieze London this year no doubt had their eyes trained only on all the magnificent and at-times wacky works being exhibited inside the tents, we at MR PORTER will admit we showed up with a slightly different motive. No, not the parties (OK, maybe some of the parties), but rather the opportunity to observe some of the best-dressed folk on the planet.
As it turns out, if you’re looking for sartorial inspiration, turn to the art crowd – visual aesthetes that they are, they typically harbour the same appreciation for colour, detail and self-expression as fashion types, but are generally less beholden to the trend cycle and, more importantly, take it all far less seriously. Case in point: the seven effortlessly stylish strangers we stumbled upon below who we believe could give the folks at Pitti, London Fashion Week and the like a serious run for their money.
01. The shoulder shrug

We love a sweater tied insouciantly around the shoulders atop an overcoat almost like a scarf. It gives off artist-living-in-Paris-in-the-1920s vibes (apt for the occasion). This man is also wearing a grandad shirt and stiff blue jeans, which add to the overall Mr Pablo Picasso-style appeal. Each piece is simple and almost utilitarian in nature but together they make a truly perfect casual day look – even if (perhaps especially because) his cuffs are slightly unevenly folded.
02. Power parka

When it comes to autumn fashion, there are the optimists (those who are reluctant to store away the last remnants of their summer wardrobe) and the realists (those who accept the circumstances and prepare for the change in weather). With his black leather boots, loose trousers and burnt-orange anorak, this attendee’s choice in outfit firmly fits him into the latter crowd. And, if you ask us, he looks all the better for it. Take note: if you’re not dressing like this already, you will be shortly.
03. A case of the blues

Proving that blue is for ever one of the easiest colours to wear, this gentleman is dressed head-to-toe in shades of it. But he has artfully combined different patterns and details to avoid looking so one-note: see the subtly pinstriped light-blue shirt, the navy cargo-style gilet over it and the petrol-blue chinos. His accessories are well chosen, too. The checked cap is part of the blue colour scheme, and we bet the camouflage umbrella is a conversation starter. And the shoes? You can’t go wrong with a pair of Converse sneakers.
04. The high-low

This gentleman here knows exactly how to casualise, yes casualise, a suit without making it sloppy. By pairing his fine black tailoring with a T-shirt and sneakers, he’s no doubt exuding a more relaxed vibe. However, the crispness of the white details creates a minimal and sophisticated palette, which makes the whole look more put together. Throw an olive-toned Mac on top for any wind or rain, and to break the black-and-white of it all.
05. The magic of accessories

If you ever needed proof that those often-overlooked finishing touches are what separate the truly stylish from the merely well-put together, take a good look at this guy. Let’s be honest: his trench coat, half-zip sweater and (intentionally, we assume) crinkled trousers are all rather lovely, but they wouldn’t exactly mark him apart from the average 30-something fella in London, would they? Instead, it’s the addition of bold statements by way of those love-em-or-hate-em orange sneakers and cherry-red cap that no doubt caught our photographer’s attention. Hot tip: throw in a crochet bag by craftsmanship-forward label Story Mfg. and you’ll almost always land the MR PORTER seal of approval.
06. In perfect harmony

If smart-casual means anything anymore, we’d like to think that it can be summed up by this fit, worn by one of the most stylish attendees at Frieze this year. The perfectly cut dark-wash jeans, the endlessly wearable bomber jacket, the hype-worthy sneakers, the thought-out choice of accessories – all elements combine effortlessly here and balance each other out. Last but not least, let’s talk about the shirt: it’s a much softer version of classic crisp, white styles – here untucked and oversized – but still sharp as a tack.
07. The workwear twin-set

How do you combine some of 2023’s favourite sartorial trends in one outfit, while still managing to look effortlessly cool? This Frieze attendee may have the answer. His colour-blocked, relaxed workwear ensemble in this year’s sleeper hit shade, brown, gives off an understated, creative air thanks to its textural and structural softness and subtle contrast stitching. It’s giving Gabriel Oak in the workshop. A pair of tonal New Balance sneakers and some cleverly chosen silver jewellery provide confidence in simplicity.
