In case the supermarket aisles stuffed with teddy bears, chocolate truffles and discounted fizz hadn’t hammered the message home yet, the “most romantic day of the year” is just around the corner. And once those show-stopping gifts have been ordered (if not, do consult our guide expeditiously) and dinner plans have been made, attention turns to what on Earth to wear. It’s a tricky task indeed, dressing for romance, but one that we at MR PORTER – as always – relish helping out with. Whatever your relationship status (on the hunt vs happily married) or go-to romantic gesture (home-cooked meal vs helicopter ride), our five-point guide has date-night dressing sorted.

01. The modern romantic

Romance ain’t dead, people. It just tends to look a little different these days. To wit: this embroidered cotton-velvet jacket from BODE, which takes the guesswork out of which floral arrangement to purchase for a loved one. Worn with a silk-twill shirt from visvim, modern boot-cut jeans from LOEWE and a pair of suede boots by SAINT LAURENT, the effect is sharp but also poetic. There’s a softness to a look like this, one that suggests you might prefer fiction and red wines over biographies of titans and gin cocktails. Add a quartz beaded necklace by éliou to demonstrate that the little details are not beyond your notice.

02. The homebody

Netflix and a cashmere throw, anyone? Not all dates need to be blowout affairs. Snuggles on the couch might be just what the doctor ordered for you and your hunny. But don’t mistake casual nights in for an opportunity to be sloppy – even veteran couples want to know their partner has made an effort. This overshirt by The Elder Statesman will do just fine as a cosy layer that still looks intentional. Meanwhile, a cashmere sweater from the same brand is a serious upgrade from your college sweatshirt. We will allow sweatpants, but let’s get them from the cult Californian brand Gallery Dept., shall we? Socks without holes are a must as are house shoes that you wouldn’t be embarrassed to wear outside.

03. The first timer

Oh dear. The first date: such excitement, such pressure. Don’t go crazy with your outfit tonight, stick to stylish basics in which you can be your best self. A classic base is a good place to start. Khaki trousers (in a wide-leg, modern cut) from Marni go very well with a blue poplin shirt from Saman Amel. Layer on an oh-so-soft cashmere and silk sweater vest by Auralee followed by a navy blazer. See how we’ve taken collegiate ingredients and made them cool? This is the recipe for success. If you absolutely must flex your style prowess in a most avant-garde way, might we recommend these subverted Derby shoes by Maison Margiela, which look classic, but sport the Tabi split toe? A messenger bag with the LOEWE logo signals you know what’s up.

04. The laid-back loverboy

Perhaps you’re one half of a cosy, long-term couple who prefer to keep it low-key. Flashy proposals and public displays of affection? No, thank you. A cosy meal at your favourite local or a walk in the park is more than enough to keep the spark alive. Let’s be real, here: at this point, your life partner has likely seen you at your absolute worst, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth keeping them on their toes every so often. Let’s start from the outside for once with this distressed leather jacket by SAINT Mxxxxxx, which absolutely oozes cool. So, too, do these underlayers: a wool-flannel shirt from Enfants Riches Déprimés and a printed long-sleeved tee also from SAINT Mxxxxxx. Dries Van Noten’s straight-leg jeans are a neat choice to tie this look together while Rick Owens sneakers lend a slightly off-kilter vibe.

05. The big spender

Finally, we come to the man who is going all-out on this date. Maybe it’s a special occasion, maybe it’s just a regular Wednesday night. Either way, if you’re bringing the big guns date-wise, you should dress the part. We’ve gone for a laid-back suit vibe here, which is elegant without being too I-just-came-from-a-meeting-with-Brad. TOM FORD provides the trousers and blazer, while this silk and cotton blend polo from Dunhill gives the look its effortless cred. Luxurious extras such as tasselled patent-leather loafers (from The Row, of course) and this chocolate-brown cashmere overcoat from Gabriela Hearst nod to where the night is headed. As do a scarf from Italian cashmere experts Loro Piana and this excellent Panerai watch. Good luck.
