Dress Code: Five Fresh Ways To Wear Denim

Good denim is the bedrock of every man’s wardrobe. Yes, that bears repeating: every man’s wardrobe. Denim is simply that important. It can be dressed up and down ad infinitum and is so simple that it’s nearly impossible to get wrong. Of course, some people do manage to do denim wrong – but, here at MR PORTER, we’re not in the business of negging any man doing his best. However, we are in the business of helping every man make the most of the items the fashion world has to offer.

Below is our guide to the season’s best jeans, jackets, and denim bits and pieces that will take you from summer through to autumn and winter in good stead.

01. The new denim jacket

Close your eyes, picture a denim jacket. It’s probably some shade of blue or black, no? And it’s highly likely that you even have one in your closet right now. But have you had one made from upcycled green patchwork denim? Probably not, which is why it’s worth nabbing this Gallery Dept. distressed jacket while you still can. The denim jacket is a staple because it’s so easy to throw on in casual moments. We like it with these Palm Angels track pants and sneakers from visvim. Dress down even further with a canvas carry-all tote and a denim (yes, really) baseball cap.

02. The classic straight-leg blue jeans

Jean trends come and go, but, wouldn’t you know, we seem to always come back to a simple straight leg in a clean light wash. You may recognise this silhouette and hue from the 1990s and 1980s, and perhaps even as far back as the 1960s or 1950s. This is a shape that, dare we say it, never goes out of style. It’s important to have a pair wrought in a hefty denim weight, like this 13.5oz version from OrSlow. You really can’t go wrong with the styling here (although a dress shirt tucked into jeans will always be a “no” from us). We’ve straddled the line of smart and casual here with a Loro Piana cashmere T-shirt, and unlined wool-blend blazer from ATON plus New Balance sneakers. But an oversized Oxford shirt would work just as nicely, as would a navy crewneck sweater.

03. The not-blue denim

Non-standard denim is a fun option to have on hand when you’re sick of your blues uniform. White is a go-to, but have you considered… mustard? Rick Owens makes a compelling case for this earthy tone cut in a slouchy wide silhouette. When you have an unusual colour on the bottom, it’s wise to pair it with something neutral such as a black T-shirt (albeit one with a demolition derby printed on it, like this one from Enfants Riches Déprimés). Of course, if you really want to go for it and stand out, keep a bright cardigan on hand and pull on some sneakers with highlighter-yellow laces for good measure.

04. The head-to-toe double denim

Forget what you know about the Canadian tuxedo – this is really nothing like it at all, though it may share some genetic strands. What we love about this coordinated duo from Miles Leon is the softness of the denim, and the fact that you could easily break the pieces up and wear them separately. But if you’re looking to go for the double-denim effect, make sure you have something crisp and white to break up the matchy-matchy look. Everyone at MR PORTER HQ is 100 per cent obsessed with these fisherman sandals from The Row, and we love how they add some rustic luxury to this already quite considered attire.

05. The updated denim shirt

Thanks to a seasonal tweak here, or a nip and tuck there, the denim shirt is another classic piece that just keeps getting better. Thrown on over a white tee or tank top – even a crochet tank, like this one from Saturdays NYC – it takes on a life of its own, transcending its humble origins. This one from MANAAKI has a playful double pocket at the breast and cross-stitching detail on the collar. We’ve matched it up with some adventurous sweatpants from KAPITAL and Yuketen loafers, but denim shirts really go with anything and may just be the most versatile item in your closet if you choose well.
