Perhaps the only universal Thanksgiving tradition – one that families all over the US observe, even as they argue over how sweet potatoes are prepared and which pie is king – is overeating. For most families, Thanksgiving isn’t a gift-giving holiday, it’s just an excuse to gather together in one place, eat an overly large turkey and just about every side you can imagine.
So why are you planning to wear jeans? Or any pant with a button or zip closure? Are you trying to be uncomfortable? Are you also packing a pair of sweats to change into post-dinner?
Why not wear a pair of pants with built-in stretch or adjustability? Loosening a drawstring is much more elegant than, say, unbuttoning your trousers at the table. We picked five pairs of drawstring trousers that will look smart (pleasing Grandma), but feel comfy (pleasing your gastrointestinal tract) while you shovel food (thankfully) down your gullet. Enjoy.

Now, here’s a good-looking option from Nili Lotan. Designed for an especially roomy fit, these dark charcoal mid-weight wool trousers look classy and put-together with a simple sweater on top, while easy slip-on loafers will also, you guessed it, slip off easily. All of which allowing you to kick back on the couch for a tryptophan-induced nap in style and comfort.

This pair of pants from Brunello Cucinelli will trick even the keenest of observers into thinking you’re wearing a classic button fly trouser. But lo, they have a drawstring waistband for when you start to overflow your boundaries. And because they’re Brunello Cucinelli, they’re made from luxurious and beautiful wool and have an elegant pleat at the front and a slim drape. Wear with an untucked Oxford shirt and shawl-neck cardigan for extra style points.

They look modern and cool to boot.

From Rick Owens’ denim capsule-cum-diffusion line, we have cotton-jersey trousers that are about as close to being sweatpants as they can be without actually being appropriate for the gym. A tapered silhouette, back pockets and a twill cotton waistband give these trousers a lean, clean look. They’re very simple, so why not go all out with a patterned sweater, but keep it easy with some white sneakers.
