THE JOURNAL

High fashion, in all its pomp and pageantry, can feel a million miles away from the real world. In many ways that’s part of its appeal: the whole thing’s supposed to be a bit of a fantasy, isn’t it? That was certainly the case with CELINE HOMME’s presentation for its AW21 collection, “Teen Knight Poem”, which used as its setting the splendid Renaissance architecture of the Château de Chambord, a 16th-century castle in the Loire Valley region of France. Plenty of pomp and pageantry, then – and that’s before we even get to the horses. (Yes, there were horses.)
Of course, all this swooning romance doesn’t count for much if the clothes – the everyday objects that connect our dreary reality to this fashion fantasy – don’t translate. Luckily, that’s something CELINE HOMME’s creative director, Mr Hedi Slimane, has always been rather good at, and this latest collection is no exception.
Strip away the fantastical backdrop and “Teen Knight Poem” is, when it comes down to it, just a clutch of really wearable pieces – all of it made according to the uncompromising standards you’d expect of one of the biggest names in French luxury. And really, who could ask for more than that? Below, we’ve picked out 12 items for your attention.
01.
The denim jacket

One of the all-time classics of the male casual wardrobe, most of us will have owned a denim trucker jacket at some point – just not one quite like this. With a full shearling lining and cut for a boxy fit that makes it great for layering over other clothes, this punky, acid-washed trucker is an ideal pick for the colder months.
02.
The T-shirt

No collection is complete without a T-shirt. If you’re interested in CELINE HOMME, but not quite ready to throw down on a pair of the brand’s faux-fur boots or ankle-length kilt, this printed cotton-jersey tee provides an easier point of access, its striking slogan “A POEM” a direct reference to the wider collection.
03.
The bomber jacket

A premium interpretation of the iconic MA-1 padded flight jacket, CELINE HOMME’s version is all present and correct – and even features the signature bright-orange lining. It also comes with the brand’s logo splashed in bold lettering across the back, just in case anyone was in danger of mistaking you for a fighter pilot.
04.
The knitted jumper

Continuing the theme of updated or reinterpreted menswear classics, there’s more to this Fair Isle sweater from CELINE HOMME than first meets the eye. Look closely at the patterns and you’ll see castle-wall crenellations and heraldic shapes, while the red, white and blue colour scheme echoes the French tricolore. Très bon.
05.
The chelsea boots

Long-time Slimane acolytes will attest to the designer’s love of Chelsea boots. This pair, sitting on substantial rubber lug soles and made from a water-resistant waxed leather, is a sturdier and more utilitarian take on the style than many that have come before, but it’s still plenty stylish – and you needn’t worry about puddles.
06.
The messenger bag

Just the brand’s name in a simple, straightforward, san serif typeface. However, CELINE HOMME’s bold logo is one of the most recognisable in fashion and has the power to turn simple accessories, such as this leather messenger bag, into statement pieces.
07.
The knight earring

A direct reference to the “Teen Knight Poem” collection’s theme and setting, this single earring in the shape of a knight also nods to the androgynous style of the late 1970s and early 1980s New Romantic movement – another inspiration for AW21.
08.
The everyday backpack

CELINE HOMME’s backpack is a sleek take on the hiking standard rendered in tough nylon gabardine and comes complete with a highly visible logo across the top to leave fellow hikers in no doubt of where you got it from. In all, a typically elevated take on the outdoors trend.
09.
The wool-flannel shirt

A versatile wardrobe staple, the checked flannel shirt comes into its own when worn as an intermediate layer. Throw this version over a white T-shirt and under a bomber jacket or leather varsity jacket and add heavy metal hardware for a foolproof, grunge-inspired look.
10.
The baseball cap

Sure, runway fashion is great – but sometimes you just want to rock the brand. In times like these, there’s no easier way of showing your allegiance to Team CELINE than with a black baseball cap. Adorned with the brand’s simple yet striking logo, it’ll add designer flair to any look.
11.
The cropped trousers

The ankle-grazing cut of these brown Prince of Wales-checked trousers sets them apart from the pair your grandfather might have worn back in the day. Use it to make a statement with your shoes: CELINE HOMME’s Derby shoes, embellished with metallic hardware, make for a suitable choice.
12.
The leather high-tops

Seen here in the iconic “bred” (black and red) colourway popular with retro basketball shoes, the CT-03 is an example of a luxury sneaker done right. Made in Italy to the exacting standards you’d expect of CELINE HOMME, it’s a love letter to classic sneaker design that amps up the luxury without losing what we loved about this model in the first place.
