Golf is a stylish affair. Some of the best-dressed sportsmen in history have played the sport – we sure can’t forget Mr Arnold Palmer’s fitted polos and cardigans or Mr Juan Antonio “Chi” Rodríguez’s signature fedora. But while the start of tournament season brings a spectacle of sartorial prowess, the style extravaganza reaches far beyond the professional course. There are plenty of well-known amateurs looking tidy in the tee box.
To celebrate Mr P.’s debut golfwear collection and its collaborative capsule with G/FORE, we’ve rounded up the best-dressed men on the green. From Mr Michael Jordan to Messrs Matthew McConaughey and Samuel L Jackson, here are seven stylish celebrities who nailed fairway style.
01. Mr Hugh Grant

Low-key may not have always been Mr Hugh Grant’s modus operandi, but when it comes to style, it pretty much sums his up. Rumour has it he’s a pretty good golfer, and if you can demonstrate your skills on the course, there’s no need to shout about it. Case in point, this understated fit he wore at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in St Andrews – all-black jacket, cap and gradient sunglasses to round it off.

02. Mr Jack Nicholson

Throughout his five-decade career, celebrated actor Mr Jack Nicholson has proved he knows how to leave a mark. On the big screen, he’s done it with big lifetime achievements – Academy Awards, Golden Globes, Baftas… the list goes on – but on the course, he can do so with as little as a pink shirt collar. That small yet inherently humorous pop of colour (as well as colour coordinating the cap to the trousers) is exactly what makes him stand out, in our eyes.

03. Mr Michael Jordan

He could be wearing the most ordinary of outfits, but he would still pull it off. Michael Jordan’s got it. And he’s got plenty of it. Besides, his outfits – including the one he wore at the Michael Jordan Celebrity Classic Golf opener in Aurora – are far from ordinary. Classic driving shoes dress up a knitted polo shirt and a pair of chocolate-brown pleated trousers, while a five-panel cap adds a touch of nonchalance to it all.

04. Mr Jamie Dornan

Irish actor Mr Jamie Dornan knows exactly how to marry form and function. St Andrews’ courses are known as the “home of golf”, so it’s only right he opted for something classic to honour the grounds. Corduroy trousers offer comfort and freedom of movement while conferring a smarter edge to the whole attire. Plus, the padded gilet provides an interesting contrast in textures – and excellent protection against the Scottish elements.

05. Mr Matthew McConaughey

If you’re as known – and venerated – as Matthew McConaughey, you won’t need much to make a characterful style statement. Particularly if you’re on a Californian golf course in the 1990s. The Hollywood hunk’s sartorial arsenal spanned pretty much anything you could expect from the decade, from 1970s-inspired leather jackets and low V-neck shirts to double-denim looks and patterned polo shirts, such as the one he wore at the Lexus Senior Golf Challenge in La Quinta over pleated trousers.

06. Mr Kevin Costner

Rumours suggest that Mr Kevin Costner mastered his swing while filming Tin Cup, the 1996 sports romcom also starring Ms Rene Russo and Mr Cheech Marin. But the American actor has come a long way from the tank tops, polo shirts and sport visors worn by his on-screen counterpart, Roy McAvoy. At the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, he was easily one of the best-dressed men on the green – the patterned tie and the button-down collar shirt kick things up a notch.

07. Mr Samuel L Jackson

Is there anything that Samuel L Jackson can’t do? He famously can’t shoot more than three takes for the same scene – by choice, that is – but what he certainly can do is pull off a strikingly bright red outfit on a golf course, where the dress code typically favours more subdued tones. The track pants, sweatshirt and a turtleneck underneath evoke his signature flair and panache. The Kangol beret fits the bill, too.
