The Best Lace-up Boots For Every Kind Of Adventure

Words by Colin Crummy

Despite what was prophesied in the movie Back To The Future II, self-lacing boots have not become a reality. Good job, really, because there’s no doubt that the physical act of lacing up your boots is somewhat fortifying, a way of bracing yourself for whatever comes next. That’s especially important this winter. You will undoubtedly be heading out into the cold, whether exploring the great outdoors or simply trying to stay warm in the outside seating area of your local pub. Either way, lace-up boots are your go-to. Their heritage may lie in labouring, but the most up-to-date iterations can be a stylish option for smarter occasions (remember them?). Here are five pairs we’re particularly fond of.

The smart boots

An equally handsome pair, Brunello Cucinelli’s Italian-made boots are arguably too good looking for solo hikes – unless you plan on taking several selfies on the climb. Refined and stylish, with tonal leather trims and gold eyelets, these beige nubuck boots deserve to be shown off.

The cold-weather-ready pair

The good folk at our in-house label, Mr P., clearly had the weather forecast to hand when they designed these Heath suede boots. Made in Northampton, England, these lace-ups are ideal for colder weather, with a split-toe construction for better water-resistance and Goodyear-welted Dainite rubber lug soles. The outlook may be challenging, but in these boots, you can weather it in style.

The lug-soled boots

These 8in 4585 Logger boots from Red Wing Shoes mean business. Inspired by the boots worn by miners back in the day, these lace-ups are made from sturdy oil-tanned leather, have Vibram lug soles for superb traction and the speed hooks facilitate fast lacing, should you have something more urgent than a leisurely winter stroll to attend to.

The snow-friendly pair

The childhood delight of snow days never fades, even if you can’t call in sick at the first sign of a few flurries. Sorry about that. Still, consolation lies in footwear (that’s what we keep telling ourselves anyway). With robust rubber soles in sturdy dark brown and black nubuck, these lace-ups from Moncler are more than up to the task of traversing icy streets.

The extra cosy pair

Inspired by traditional hiking styles, these Loro Piana lace-up boots will keep your toes toasty this winter, whether you’re heading into the wilderness or simply into town for drinks. That’s if you manage to leave the house at all. The padded cashmere collars and lining make these such a cosy option we wouldn’t blame you if you wore them with no intention of going outside at all.
