Every Polo Shirt You’ll Need This Summer
Words by Ms Molly Isabella Smith
13 July 2021
The polo shirt may have cemented itself as a bona fide men’s style classic, but it’s one that continues to evolve. On MR PORTER’s shelves, you’ll find a smorgasbord of options – some stay largely true to the item’s sporting roots, while others offer a fresh twist on a blueprint that has existed for over a century. Here are five that deserve to win a spot in your summer closet.
01.
The classic polo
Mr Ralph Lauren might not have invented the polo shirt, but he’s largely responsible for its now permanent presence in our wardrobes, and with his eponymous Polo Ralph Lauren brand, the US designer has pretty much perfected the formula. This one from the company’s luxury arm – Ralph Lauren Purple Label – takes things up a notch: it’s made from fine mercerised cotton and is embroidered with a fresh version of the now iconic polo player motif.
02.
The logo polo
Stone Island – or Stoney, to its most devoted fans – was a key part of the uniform of the football casual movement that took over the stadium terraces of Europe in the 1980s. Not much has changed since: this polo, with its sporty tipping and anchor insignia, is a near replica of the versions the brand was making 40 years ago. If authenticity is what you’re going for, then, all you need now is a box-fresh pair of adidas Originals sneakers and your finest trackies.
03.
The printed polo
Being prevented from jetting off to an island paradise this summer will not stop us from living, and dressing, as if we are. The next best thing to sipping an umbrella-adorned cocktail on the beach, Dries Van Noten’s vibrant shirt – part of our recent exclusive collaboration with the designer – is printed with plenty of postcard-worthy foliage. The open collar, free from any buttons, and slightly oversized fit only enhances its laid-back spirit.
04.
The smart polo
Making the trek back into the office? Stuck on what to wear? A polo shirt is a smart choice, being both dressier than a T-shirt and less stiff than a shirt and tie. This Mr P. example, knitted from soft cashmere and silk, also offers pyjama-like comfort – meaning it’s just as attractive to the WFH classes, too.
05.
The terry polo
You know that imaginary paradise we mentioned earlier ? Living vicariously through our wardrobes also applies in the case of this Orlebar Brown shirt. The brand, which has outfitted 007 himself in recent years, has made poolside terry polos – the type made from towelling material – a speciality, alongside its signature tailored swim shorts. The Clive, as this navy one is named, is made from a blend of cotton and linen, which makes it even more suited for the height of summer.
