The Five Hats To Stick On Your Head This Summer

Always thought you weren’t a hat person? Allow us just a couple minutes to change your mind. Except, here, we won’t bang on about how a hat automatically adds an exciting new layer to your summer outfits – because you already knew that. Nor that they offer an unbeatable (and necessary) shield from the sun’s rays. Instead, the opinion at MR PORTER is that the man who believes he doesn’t suit hats simply hasn’t yet found the right hat (or in the case of a visor, almost-hat) for him. Need further convincing? Below, we’ve picked five diverse but equally handsome pieces that we believe will convert staunch headgear sceptics to the cause.

01.

The upgraded Berluti bucket hat

Trust the Italians to transform the most utilitarian of summer accessories – the bucket hat, that is – into something both elegant and sumptuous. The work of Berluti, this piece comes crafted from a plush yet lightweight chenille that sets it apart from the usual cotton-canvas wares and nods to the brand’s rich heritage with its scrawled Scritto motif. Glastonbury gear this is not.

02.

The handcrafted Frescobol Carioca Panama

No brand has a total monopoly on summer. But were we forced to choose just one to kit out our vacation wardrobes, then Rio de Janeiro-inspired Frescobol Carioca would be high up on list. This Panama hat is a testament to its knack for exquisitely crafted warm-weather gear – it’s handmade by Ecuadorian artisans from toquilla straw, trimmed with an elegant grosgrain ribbon and will instantly transport the sizzling beaches of Ipanema to your less tropical turf.

03.

The linen Loro Piana cap

Succession may sadly be over, but Kendall Roy’s beloved Loro Piana caps thankfully live on. Pay homage, as is only right, with this seasonally appropriate iteration, which is spun from a lightweight linen in a goes-with-everything navy and instantly conveys Silicon-Valley-billionaire-summering-on-his-yacht-in-Amalfi.

04.

The flagship Gucci fedora

Come summer, there’s no easier way to ooze old-world Italian sprezzatura – the sort that would have you fit right in with the folks at Pitti Uomo – than by popping on a straw fedora. Better yet, try one by Italy’s very own Gucci. This one bears the brand’s iconic and unmistakable red-and-green stripes.

05.

The TOM FORD leather visor

Don’t sleep on the visor this season. For one, it’s brilliant for accommodating more, er, laterally blessed skulls and preserving perfect barnets, all while still offering excellent sun protection. And as this supple chocolate-brown number by TOM FORD proves, it can be a pretty exquisite display of leather craftsmanship in its own right.
