THE JOURNAL

On top of its Southern charm and great live music scene, Austin, Texas, is a major hub for creatives. And down in the Lone Star State’s capital, it’s no surprise that the annual South by Southwest film, music and comedy festival has been collecting some very stylish attendees – from cowboys to grunge boys. Keep on reading to see the best-dressed men at 2024’s SXSW.
01. Workwear with proportions

At this point, workwear has become a staple element of most of our wardrobes. This festivalgoer shows why. The proportions of utility styles like the jacket shown here are flattering and forgiving, and the look feels considered but not overly studied. It’s worth noting the cut of the jeans, too. Trousers that sit higher on the waist might feel daunting, but are almost universally flattering. Look for a high-rise cut – the last thing you want is unsightly bunching. And if you’ve been wondering how to introduce a pair of loafers into your weekend outfit rotation, let this be your guide.
02. Grey’s the new it colour

“Stealth grey is becoming one of the key colours in 2024,” said trend predictor for DTS Ms Agus Panzoni in a recent TikTok video. And this gentleman right here seems to have got the memo (or perhaps set the trend himself) with his cool-toned grey pleated pants. He has opted to let his oversized trousers be the main attraction of the outfit by keeping a minimalist and monochrome palette of all-black with the rest of his pieces.
03. The sandwich rule

Colour coordination can be a tricky business, but when executed properly, it can single-handedly bring a get-up to life. Such is the case with this black-and-beige outfit worn by this stylish attendee. He’s put together a perfect example of what TikTok has dubbed the “sandwich rule” – otherwise known as matching your top to your shoes – by pairing a sporty bomber jacket with a pair of tonal, court-inspired sneakers. Underneath, an all-black T-shirt and convertible wide-leg cargos allow him to stay adaptable in Austin’s unpredictable weather.
04. How the western look was won

Well, looky at who rolled into town. Now, ordinarily we wouldn’t be taking sartorial advice from the Preacher comic books. But for figuring out weird times in Texas, we guess this is as good a manual as any. If you’re going to go down the apocalyptic cowpoke route without being accused of cosplay, then you have to commit. So, yes, a well-worn biker jacket, bolo tie and assorted metal hardware (is that a Zippo on his chain?) line up with the wide-brimmed hat. Although we’d wager there’s easier – if less dramatic – ways to carry a bum bag.
05. Big trousers with intention

It takes guts to pull off trousers this voluminous, but from this man’s stance we can tell he has confidence in spades. Every bit of his outfit is intentional, from the blue frames and mustard-coloured tee to the leather obi belt and navy hat, shacket and trousers (which look like a three-piece set). Intention, it turns out, is the key ingredient to pulling off an outré outfit.
06. Bringing grunge back

A checked flannel shirt, a T-shirt layered underneath and super light-wash jeans? That can only mean one thing: grunge is back. This gentleman taps into the heyday of Nirvana and Pearl Jam with his edgy yet laid-back style. However, he has made it all his own with well-chosen accessories including dark sunglasses, two signet rings, a silver bracelet, gold chain, single hoop earring and a scarf worn as a belt. This look also works for the tricky in-between time when it’s no longer winter but not quite spring – a Polo Ralph Lauren shirt as a layer you can keep on or take off is perfect for trans-seasonal dressing.
