THE JOURNAL

September is a big month for fashion. It starts off with the enviable get-ups on the Venice Film Festival’s red carpets and draws to a close with the world’s best-dressed men congregating in London, Milan and Paris for their respective Fashion Weeks, resulting in endless outfit inspiration for the colder months ahead. But away from the glitz and the glamour, it’s a big month for us, too – it’s the time when we can start adding a couple of extra layers and finally cast our eyes towards the season’s best coats, knitwear and accessories. And perhaps even steal styling tips and tricks from the aforementioned well-turned-out guys. So, who did it best? From Mr Harry Styles’ pared-back yet effective outfit to Mr Jahleel Weaver’s twist on the classic suit, here are our top seven.
01. Mr Jahleel Weaver

“I believe in giving people who… might not always have the spotlight on them more visibility,” Mr Jahleel Weaver told Vogue a few winters back. More a nod to being championed and brought under Rihanna’s umbrella (ella-ella) than a come-and-get-me plea to MR PORTER. But we took note regardless and we’re happy to offer our approval, too. Here, the stylist and Fenty deputy creative director turns his craft in on himself, with a pleasingly drapey navy suit and pinstripe shirt. Yet, wherever you look, it’s the details that grab the eyeballs – from the glint of a necklace and pin on the collar to the belt buckle and dangling keychain. The snakeskin shoes add further drama to what would otherwise be a fairly sober look.

02. Mr Harry Styles

What is there left to say about Mr Harry Styles’ personal style that we haven’t already noted in our own, er, fanfic? Well, contrary to the outlandish outfits that he was once known for, his latest incarnation sees the singer ditching the feather boas for more pared-back pieces. His “normal-guy era”, as Vogue recently coined it – and we’re fully invested. Speaking of which, Styles is seen here at SS Daley’s recent SS25 show. And, sure, a blue overshirt, straight-legged trousers and matching Vans shouldn’t be taking attention away from the label that Styles holds a minority stake in. But here we are.

03. Mr Leon Bridges

When we spoke to him back in 2015, a then up-and-coming Mr Leon Bridges referenced the aptly-named Dapper Rebels – a dandyish 1960s LA gang – as his style icons of choice. “I didn’t decide to myself, ‘Right, I need to be a 1960s soul man.’ I just started playing this music and dressing this way, and it became a part of me,” he told us. Now a musical force to be reckoned with, he’s still somewhat of a dapper rebel himself – something that the double-denim outfit, complete with flared jeans, textured knit and pointy Chelsea boots can definitely attest to.

04. Mr Colman Domingo

Mr Colman Domingo is one of those generational acting talents who could inhabit almost any role. But the skin he always seems most comfortable in is his own. And, in character as himself, he always hits the right notes. Take this tonal outfit, which he wore recently to Paris Fashion Week. At its core, it’s a simple look tied to varying shades between sandy beige and off-white. What takes it to the next level is the accessories – the hat and crossbody tote, yes, but also the jewellery. A mishmash of beads and chains, with a bold choice of signet ring and earrings, ensuring his personality shines through.

05. CKTRL

Providing a much-needed pop of colour, the London-based musician and producer Mr Bradley Miller – aka CKTRL – brought a microdose of serotonin to the recent JW Anderson show and our lineup. OK, fine, the former wasn’t short of monoamine neurotransmitter-emitting looks, but we’ll take our hits where we can get them. The name, in case you wondered, stands for “can’t keep to reality”, but we’re glad he landed in ours. And aligned with some of our key messaging: when experimenting with a jazzy piece, it pays to use the rest of your outfit to ground things. Hence, a polo shirt of various reds is brought to Earth with simple black trousers and shiny patent black shoes.

06. Mr Brad Pitt

If Mr Brad Pitt says flared pants are back, then they are back – and in a big way. We’ve seen them all over this season’s runways (check out AMIRI’s SS25 show for the perfect pair), but the American actor, now promoting his new film Wolfs, may just be the most sartorially palatable example. Particularly when the flares in question are part of a contrast-stitched, pale yellow suit with short lapels and chest pockets, styled with nothing but a tank top, chunky loafers and classic aviator sunglasses.

07. Mr Raven Smith

As far as being a man about town goes, Mr Raven Smith has range. He’s a prolific writer, an actor – he’s made a cameo in the upcoming third season of Industry – a podcast host and a presenter. Plus, he may just be the funniest person you come across on the fashion internet. But everything he does – including every sartorial choice – feels intentional. “I don’t want to have a uniform and just throw clothes on that I know look nice,” Smith told us recently. “I want to always be striving to push in some direction.” When the direction is a sheer Simone Rocha shirt, styled over perfectly cut pleated trousers and the London-based designer’s latest collaboration with Crocs, we’ll let him take the lead.
