THE JOURNAL

By the time Everything Everywhere All At Once had won everything everywhere in short succession, there were as many googly eyes in MR PORTER’s London HQ as in the film itself. But that didn’t stop us from spotting a multiverse of winning get-ups. From internet daddy Mr Pedro Pascal eschewing a bow tie to Mr Colin Farrell and the ultimate accessory – an equally sharply turned out mini-me – via, er, Mr Hugh Grant’s reminder to use moisturiser. It might not have had the unexpected drama of last year’s event, but, hey, at least the outfits slapped. Here are seven of the best.

Mr Michael B Jordan

The flash of chest we saw coming. We’ve previously covered – as in written about, we’re not prudes – the rise of male cleavage. The oversized brooch, however, took us by surprise. Earlier in the night, Mr Michael B Jordan turned on the class with a nod to his “auntie” Ms Angela Bassett and a sharp Louis Vuitton tux. But it wasn’t just the big up to the Best Supporting Actress nominee that won us over. Both in the ceremony itself and here at the Vanity Fair afterparty, it was the accessories pinned to his lapel that stood out. A knockout one-two from the Creed III director and actor.

Mr Austin Butler

Though a relative newcomer, Mr Austin Butler has quickly established a signature look during his promotional run for Elvis: lean, minimal tailoring with an emphasis on clean lines. His look on Oscars night felt like the final evolutionary stage of that approach, a classic tuxedo from SAINT LAURENT, cut with subtly exaggerated shoulders (a silhouette the brand has been exploring of late). Amid a sea of menswear looks scrabbling in vain to do something “different”, this was a standout. A special commendation should go, too, to his after-party look, which swapped the shirt-and-dicky-bow for a fluid silk shirt.

Mr Matt Smith

Mr Matt Smith passed on the Doctor Who baton almost a decade ago (and is probably tired of us still talking about it), but it seems the gift for time travel has remained with him. For last night’s Oscars, he ventured back to the 1980s (the good bits, that is) and opted for a loosely tailored, wet-look navy suit, custom-made by Paul Smith, and off-white shirt that had a retro “bent copper” feel about it. To avoid it veering into costume territory, he’s smartly left the jacket unbuttoned (and the hair undone) for a touch of nonchalance. The short tie, glistening loafers and artfully teased tendrils of hair top off a perfect lesson in loungy lizard luxe.

Mr Paul Mescal

Mr Paul Mescal may not have picked up the Oscar for his spellbinding performance in Aftersun, but he’s landed yet another spot on the MR PORTER best-dressed list (a far more coveted prize, some would say). Last night, the actor took to the champagne carpet in a white double-breasted jacket by Gucci, complete with rose brooch. Credit must go to his partner-in-style Ms Felicity Kay, who’s kitted him out impeccably over this award season – although let’s be clear, the brooding, effortless confidence that makes Mescal so captivating is entirely his own. With his newfound movie-star status – and a wardrobe of exquisite tailoring – might we have a contender for next James Bond?

Mr Evan Mock

We know what you’re thinking: yet another black suit? Sure, on first glance, Mr Evan Mock’s Ferragamo tux wasn’t the most cutting-edge thing on the carpet – but seeing as this is a man who has stepped out in more crop tops over the past couple of years than most of us will brave in a lifetime, the more restrained path actually feels subversive. It’s the hair that’s doing most of the heavy lifting here, though – turns out the slicked, Elvis-style pompadour ‘do can in fact look cool, rather than corny, if you have spades of confidence and the world’s sharpest cheekbones. And those who are yet to embrace jewels for evening, take note: that dusting of bling on pinky ring is the finishing touch that elevates this outfit from merely stylish to subtly brilliant.

Mr Joe Jonas

Is it a tuxedo, is it a suit, is it pyjamas? Doesn’t really matter – the fact is Mr Joe Jonas brought a dash of louche, old-world glamour to Vanity Fair’s annual Oscars affair. This velvet and satin set looked comfortable enough that he could simply remove his shoes (well, his formal patent slippers) and hop into bed post-party. But don’t be fooled: as cosy as it may appear, this outfit is packed full of intricate details. We loved the floral embroidery and the chinoiserie-inspired fastenings on the jacket. Look closely and you’ll notice that his shirt is done up by… is that ribbons? A bow? Well done Mr Jonas – this is the look that keeps on giving.

Mr Reece Feldman

Mr Reece Feldman, aka “Hollywood’s TikTok guy”, is no stranger to the red carpet, although he’s usually standing on the other side of the iPhone camera. How grateful we were that he was subject not the shooter this time around – lest we have been denied a glance at his outfit. Back at the Academy Awards for the second year running, Feldman stole the show in an avant-garde tuxedo from up-and-coming Malaysian designer Dickson Lim. Accessorised with a single black satin glove adorned with sparkling white-gold jewellery, his outfit proved that red-carpet suiting doesn’t have to be dull.
