May we be so bold… No, we be so bold in May. Ignore what sounds like chewy (not Chewie) Yoda-esque syntax, but you get what we’re driving at. May, the calendar month from which we’ve just emerged, lends itself to experimenting with what we wear. Again, not in a Star Wars-sense. Save it for Comic-Con in July. The only cosplay we’re considering is dressing up as a better you. So, put thoughts of sci-fi sagas aside for Roman ruminations, via ancient Greece. A long time ago in a country not so far, far away, the Greek goddess Maia, for whom May was named, was appropriated by Rome and given a portfolio that included growth and fertility. This makes the month a prime time to blossom. All pops of colour and slight shows of skin – goodness knows we need the vitamin D. And you know who exuded big Maia energy this year? The guys below. The May force be with them.
01. Mr Josh O’Connor

And when in Rome… Ceramicist, gardener and chameleon-like Challengers actor Mr Josh O’Connor arrived for the David di Donatello Awards to support his other recent theatrical release, La Chimera. Suitably for fans of Greek myth, his outfit was composed of disparate pieces – a minty knitted vest, maroon shirt, worn with an open neck, and black trousers that seem to drip down his legs and pool over his shoes. (Cheeky smile: model’s own.) As an ensemble, it’s more than the sum of its parts, from a man who puts his all into his.

02. Mr Harris Dickinson

At the Met Gala – the annual benefit event for the New York museum, overseen by Ms Anna Wintour – the focus tends to be on the more avant-garde garbs. But what of the outfits that you’d actually wear? You know, IRL. Enter British actor (and former MR PORTER interviewee) Mr Harris Dickinson, who met the brief, but did so in a matter that wouldn’t look out of place on any of the other 365 days of this year. Sure, it helps when you’re an ambassador for Prada – it’s a different kind of diplomatic immunity – but it’s also how you wear it. So, the shiny green beads are the work of Mr Raf Simons, but the top button is all the Triangle Of Sadness star. Details, baby.

03. Mr Paapa Essiedu

British actor Mr Paapa Essiedu has been busy as of late – his latest cinematic endeavour, The Outrun, came out earlier this year, and he’s set to star in Death Of England trilogy in the London’s West End theatre @sohoplace this summer – but that hasn’t stopped him from showing off what, sartorially, really works for him. At May’s British Vogue and Netflix Bafta Television Awards party, that came by way of a thoughtfully colour-coordinated three-piece suit that borrows design elements from Regency-era pantaloons and 17th-century doublets, yet feels incredibly fresh and modern.

04. Mr Donald Glover

For an indication of where suiting might be going, take a leaf out of Mr Donald Glover’s book. Or SAINT LAURENT’s lookbook, which Glover is showcasing. Either would tell you that we’re segueing into a realm of larger proportions. Bordering on Mr David Byrne in Stop Making Sense, in fact. Glover, himself also the musical virtuoso, is here burning down the house at the Met Gala. Beyond the cut, the colour, too, has a vintage feel, a slightly peachy beige with darker brown shirt and tie. The Cartier watch, moustache and black cat brooch all also echo the throwback vibe. Hold tight, wait till the party’s over.

05. Mr Austin Butler

Mr Austin Butler is no stranger to our best-dressed list – and for good reason. If we had to pick the well-dressed celebrities who come into their own in a suit, as in they really know how to wear one, the 32-year-old Californian beau would surely be high up in our ranks. Moving away from the military unforms donned in Masters Of The Air, Butler attended an event for the Apple TV+ miniseries in a double-breasted, two-piece suit, which, styled over a relaxed tank top, evokes the quiet sophistication we’ve come to expect from his personal style.

06. Mr Pharrell Williams

We nailed three ways to master the cowboy trend back in the Wild West of 2023, but what does that look like in 2024? If you’re looking to incorporate westernwear without tapping into dressing-up territory, you can learn a thing or two from Mr Pharrell Williams. Every single details matter here, from the flared jeans in a faded, whiskered medium wash and the fringed leather jacket, to the turn-up, wide-brimmed cowboy hat, to the perfectly complementing jewellery. Yeehaw!

07. A$AP Rocky

Prior to the birth of his first son, A$AP Rocky told Dazed, “I’m not trying to describe a saint, but realistically, I just want a cool child with cool parents,” and he may well have exceeded our expectations on his side of the bargain (though we’re sure his kids will also deliver). From music and collaborations to the way he’s able to capture the style zeitgeist, cool is at the centre of pretty much everything this dad does, as this outfit demonstrates. There’s nothing as timeless – but as sartorially relevant – as baggy jeans, a white tank top and a thrown-on, open button-up to pull the look together.
