THE JOURNAL

It’s that time once again, when we pass sartorial scrutiny over the month’s most sartorially fluent men. It’s an accolade achieved though either a natural shrewdness for self-presentation or quite often, having the good fortune to be in cahoots with an esteemed house of Paris or Milan. The latter feels particularly relevant this month, with the calendar being packed with AW fashion weeks and their ritzy shindigs, making particularly ripe pickings for “The List”. These chaps know that dressing up in the name of high fashion is the most effective antidote to the January blues.

Mr Tahar Rahim

“Match your watch to your outfit,” we always say. Easily done if you’re in a three-piece suit and tie; a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso or Cartier Ballon Bleu will do nicely. But what if the outfit in question is an eclectic combination of sombre navy shawl-collar coat, black rollneck, lurid green-blue-Damier technical trousers and horse-bit loafers? You need something a bit more genre-defying. Something like Louis Vuitton’s Tambour Street Diver. On paper, it has the specs of a go-anywhere dive watch, but in reality the pop-art bright blue details, polished steel bezel and dressy, bar-shaped lugs make it more of a post-modern reinterpretation of this staple watchmaking concept.

Tyler, The Creator

Is there anything Tyler, the Creator can’t pull off? The look he wore for Nigo’s Parisian debut at Kenzo certainly wasn’t one of his most outlandish yet, but very few people can mix and match style movements as impeccably as the hip rapper does. (His colour-coordination skills are unrivalled, too.) So it’s no surprise he has become a fixture on our best-dressed men lists. Signature trapper hat? Tick. Wide-leg, workwear trousers? Tick. Preppy, East Coast country club aesthetic? Cue the shirt and pin-embellished cardigan (the latter, while under the flashbulbs might appear pale grey, is in reality closer to a duck-egg blue) – tick. We can’t help but give top marks for the matching moccasins and baby blue manicure, too.

Mr Pharrell Williams

Any man worth his sartorial salt knows that you can’t go wrong with camo, which music maven Mr Pharrell Williams proved when attending this month’s glitzy Chanel show in Paris. As well as having armed forces clout in spades, his oversized puffer clearly had enough pocket space to allow for the minute cross-body grail bag. Meanwhile, his hand-spun cardie, distressed denim and suede boots add a softer civilian note that prevent him looking like he’s just gone Awol from the barracks. As for his pearly eyewear, we’re sure it would have received the wink of approval from the nacre-loving Ms Coco Chanel herself.

Mr Dominic Fike

We’ve obviously got a lot of time for Fezco and his carefully removed Palace knitwear. And Rue’s wallowing in oversized sweats captures our current mood. But Euphoria newcomer Elliot, played by Mr Dominic Fike, is our latest style crush. While his fictional counterpart makes money from selling stems on the internet (we had to look up what this meant, at once revealing our lack of technical knowledge, entrepreneurial gumption and musical talent), Fike is a successful singer-songwriter in his own right. He dresses the part, too – the real-life part, not the fictional part – as shown here ducking between shows during Paris Fashion Week. Sure, the micro-check suit teamed with gleaming high-tops and the glint of a gold chain is a solid choice. But what lifts this outfit is what it is missing. To think, “keep your shirt on” is a refrain usually deployed to those_ losing_ their cool…

Bloody Osiris

Fashion aficionado and self-proclaimed “Sales Associates Dream”, according to his Instagram bio (probably because he can make anything work), Bloody Osiris definitely specialises in layering. The celebrity stylist made his appearance at the Kenzo AW22 show wearing his best street-meets-trail ensemble. First, a nod to the military bucket hat, which keeps coming back every season. Second, autumn hues and checks are back in the form of a jacket-on-jacket concept. Wearing the snuggest auburn puffer over a lighter plaid jacket, over a sweater, is not only fun and interesting, but also all-weather friendly. Whatever the climate brings, he is ready for it.

Mr Kyle Hanagami

K-pop choreographer Mr Kyle Hanagami’s eclectic look is all about sartorial yin and yang. Note how the floatiness of the floral shirt is grounded by those tough military boots; how the wholesomeness of his chocolate-brown open-knit jumper is lent a street-smart edge by those panelled track pants (and further ramped up a notch by that vermillion-red Y2K-style cap). On anyone else, an outfit consisting of such disparate elements, seemingly raided from five separate wardrobes, could’ve quickly veered from high fashion into pure and utter chaos. But don’t forget, this is a man classically trained in the art of coordination.

Mr Jeff Goldblum

Mr Jeff Goldblum’s knack for pulling off flame-emblazoned shirts and animal-print trousers is in no small part due to his ability to evade Father Time. His Dorian Gray visage is allegedly owed to an unorthodox habit of slathering butter on his face. While the ensemble we see here is certainly more sedate, he clearly knows the power of black: the deep, inky shade of his suit, fedora and loafers make the hues of his shirt pop, providing a focal point beyond the N95 face mask. Little wonder that Ms Miuccia Prada and Mr Raf Simons had him close their recent AW22 show in all black. Although, thankfully, he appeared to have left the Lurpak in the fridge.
