THE JOURNAL

The Grammys are always a bit off the wall when it comes to style. It would be weird if every guy showed up in a regular old tux, Oscars style. Bonkers fashion is the norm at the music awards and last night’s festivities fit the bill perfectly.
If we’re talking trends, we saw lots of leather and lots of colourful suits. It was further proof that men are sick and tired of sitting around in sweatpants and socks. Given half the chance, men will splash on the flashiest outfit they have and go, literally, to town. Something to look forward to for those still of us stuck in lockdown or quarantine. For everyone else, here’s a little inspiration for your next dinner date, courtesy of some of the flyest guys in the music biz.

Mr Trevor Noah

Let’s start at the beginning, with our host, Mr Trevor Noah. He opted for a spin on the classic tux (we know we just said a tux isn’t the done thing at the Grammys, but we make an exception for the host). Mr Noah’s double-breasted Gucci number with lovely wide lapels and styled with a diamond-burst brooch from Tiffany & Co was an ode to the days when we could get dressed up. It fitted him perfectly and for that reason is utterly inspiring. If you’re going to wear something classic, it needs to fit right. If you haven’t been spending your time in isolation getting all your clothes properly tailored, what have you been doing?

Finneas

Music producer, singer-songwriter, actor and brother of Ms Billie Eilish, Finneas also wore Gucci to receive his Grammy awards. He opted for a single-breasted suit in a light shade of Pepto-Bismol and paired it with a striped shirt and a ribbon bow tie and lightly heeled loafers. Not an easy look to carry off, but the millennial pink was the perfect complement to his red hair. If you’re looking for ways to branch out wardrobe-wise, a coloured suit might be your best bet.

Black Pumas

Mr Adrian Quesada (left) and Mr Eric Burton of the Texas-based psychedelic band Black Pumas have proved that just because you sing in a group doesn’t mean you have to match at awards shows. These two have gone in different sartorial directions, each excellent in its own way. Mr Quesada’s snug plaid suit was made by small indie menswear brand Art Comes First and we like how he’s paired it with Chelsea boots, something we’ve been advocating for ages. Mr Burton went for aubergine Dior and what looks like a hand-knitted hat. Wonderful. High-low at it’s absolute best.

Mr Jack Antonoff

Ms Taylor Swift’s producer wore a suit of epic proportions – and we mean that literally. The size of those trouser legs? The fit of the jacket? It’s 1920s hobo-luxe and we’re all for it. Playing with your silhouette is one of the best ways to experiment with suiting. It might not always work, but, as with many of the things Mr Antonoff touches, this look turned to gold. It’s got a whiff of Belgian tailoring and a pinch of Japanese street style, all tied together with a goofy, happy smile. You’re never fully dressed, etc.

Mr Harry Styles

Our dependable style king brought two nutty outfits to the Grammys. Mr Harry Styles’ red-carpet look was a green plaid blazer paired with brown velvet trousers and a lavender feather boa. For his stage performance, he slipped into leather trousers and a leather blazer with no shirt beneath – and a green boa. All Gucci, of course, and all exactly what we’ve come to expect of Mr Styles: a little feminine, a little masculine, a lot of rock ’n’ roll. The challenge with Mr Styles is that he’s hard to copy – not everyone could pull these looks off – but his idiosyncrasy is inspiring nonetheless. Wear what makes you feel good: that’s the anthem of the year.
