February is a cruel month for those in the entertainment business. While awards season crowns its fair share of winners, the odds dictate you are more likely to be a loser. You could put in the performance of a lifetime and still walk away empty-handed. You can be the greatest performer of your generation, revered by your peers, and still the top prize will elude you (no grudges here, though).
Our advice to A-listers? Never mind the showbiz gongs. Strive, instead, for a spot on the prestigious MR PORTER best-dressed list. It is democratic – no underhand deals or behind-the-scenes lobbying, we can assure you – and you don’t have to bare your bits or lose half your body weight in the hope of being taken seriously. Best of all, there are seven spots up for grabs. If you didn’t make the cut this time around, you only have to wait until next month to give it another go.
And so, without further ado, here are our Best-Dressed of February 2023 (and yes, they are all winners in our book). Congratulations, fellas. The only trophy that really matters this month is in the post.

Mr Vincent Cassel

Mr Vincent Cassel has embodied an array of characters over the years. Who could forget Vinz in La Haine, François Toulour of the Ocean’s franchise or Thomas Leroy from Black Swan? Our favourite, by far, is his recurring role as The Coolest Frenchman On The Planet, which he reprised this February. The accessories are key. Whether he’s in a beige Prada suit at a film première, as seen here, or a Henley T-shirt and swim shorts on the beaches of Brazil, he is rarely without his black-framed shades with tinted lenses. Throw in the Gallic charm that makes both those outfits look equally effortless and it’s no wonder he’s consistently in our good books.

Mr Ashton Kutcher

The trucker caps and plaid shirts are gone. The casual running-errands ensemble Mr Ashton Kutcher was rocking earlier this month in LA confirms the eternally youthful actor has grown up (just a bit). Kutcher has cool-dad style down to a T. This is a symphony in blue, from the artfully lived-in chore jacket and jeans to the tonal navy sweater and seaman’s beanie. The combo skirts the line between thrown together and put together beautifully, with its knowing nod to the double denim trend. A reminder to all of us that sometimes, less – whether that be fewer colours, materials or accessories – really is more.

Ever since his Bafta-winning and Oscar-nominated turn in Mr Baz Luhrmann’s biopic Elvis, Mr Austin Butler has taken to contemporary tailoring with a subtle retro flair. The double-breasted Giorgio Armani suit the actor wore to the Oscar Nominees Luncheon exudes the louche chicness that the Italian designer made famous in the 1980s with his costumes for American Gigolo. Here, Butler deftly tips formalwear into smartly casual territory by forgoing a tie with his classic white shirt. A thin chain necklace and polished black boots are all he needs to complete the effortlessly stylish look.

We have talked and talked about the shirtlessness epidemic on the red carpet since the beginning of the year. For better or worse, A-list men have been boldly showing cleavage under their suits and style maven Mr Eddie Redmayne is, rather unexpectedly, the latest to join the bare-chested club. On the Baftas red carpet, the British actor stepped out in a one-piece black suit by Alexander McQueen – and not much else. The result was an intrinsically simple yet groundbreakingly modern ensemble that proves you don’t need a lot to make a statement.

Blessedly, Mr Harry Styles changed out of his court jester onesie from the Grammy’s red carpet and into this three-piece ensemble for the rest of the show. We say blessedly because, as much as we admire his pluck, this get-up manages to be unusual and much more wearable for the common man than a Poiret-perfect onesie. We are particularly interested in the way he has played with proportions: generous tan trousers with a crisp crease and heavy break, cropped cream jacket with wide lapels and then a teensy sparkly tank. Unusual, yes. Inspiring, definitely.

MR PORTER knows a thing or two about being born and raised in Philadelphia. Mostly from the opening sequence of The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air. So, we have a vague idea of where the fantastically named Mr Quil Lemons is coming from, although it wasn’t b-ball he was shooting. In 2021, the Philly native became the youngest photographer to have his work featured on the cover of Vanity Fair. But he is no slouch in front of the camera, either. At the launch of Acne Studios’ limited collection in partnership with the estate of the artist Mr Larry Stanton, the snapper was seen in a fuzzy, swirly purple cardigan (in fact, a piece named after him, by SKY HIGH FARM), tiny vest, bug-eye sunnies, leather trousers, boots and cuff, with the ultimate handy accessory, a key carabiner. Chillin’ out, maxin’, relaxin’, all cool.

It is only the second month of the year, but Mr Shawn Mendes is already offering some early style inspiration for the upcoming balmy seasons. Spotted outside this year’s Grammy Awards after-party, the 24-year-old made a compelling case for embracing the lace for the warmer months ahead. Paired with flared black trousers and smooth leather Chelsea boots, the musician’s simple look proved that his sleek, understated style is no-frills, all lace. The sun-kissed tan helped, too. We’re feeling the same way about his outfit as we are his new hairstyle: buzzed.
