THE JOURNAL
Hopefully you’ve spent the best part of the past month with your OOO automatic reply on. No doubt you still found things to worry about, though. Like: why is everyone suddenly throwing the word “demure” around? And in a not very mindful way. And: is that Oasis-reunion contract absolutely watertight? And, sure: how many emails will be sitting in your inbox when you get back to your desk? Sadly, we can’t help you with any of the above. However, for those with lingering concerns about how to get dressed – now, that we can deal with. Below, the men who were out there looking the part while you were sat on a pool lounger wearing nowt but a big smile and swim shorts. Take note, and maybe your return to the office will be a little more Messrs Lenny Kravitz and Jeremy Allen White and a little less Patty and Selma.
Mr Lenny Kravitz

“It Ain’t Over ’Til It’s Over” was Mr Lenny Kravitz’s first US top-10 hit, and also his attitude to the 1970s ever since. The first full decade that the musician lived through has very much shaped his style, and certainly his silhouette. Note the steady flare to his trousers here, at the European premiere of Blink Twice. Of course, parental pride can help – the devoted dad supporting his daughter’s directorial debut is a good look to wear. But also the double-breasted suit jacket teamed with a complete lack of a shirt – he’s 60, by the way – is quite the flex. Are you gonna go his way?

Mr Channing Tatum

Remember when we asked ourselves which is the most expensive shade? After thorough research, we concluded that beige and rich brown were up there among the colours of money. Mr Channing Tatum may have not read our story, but he sure knows his tones – and how to nail proportions, too. An undone shirt in a deep chocolate brown looks instantly more elevated, and so do the billowing beige trousers, which fall effortlessly over the matching brown loafers.

Mr Omar Sy

The American cowboy is one of fashion’s most enduring and influential archetypes. And while westernwear has been reinterpreted in many different ways – by many different brands – we’ve seen very few examples that have been as well executed as Mr Omar Sy’s get-up at the LA premier of Peacock’s The Killer. A trucker jacket embellished with turquoise and metal rivets, wide-leg trousers with neatly pressed creases and cowboy boots – it’s a look that would serve on the ranch, but is just as appropriate for the red carpet.

Mr Lee Isaac Chung

Whirlwind promotional tours are in keeping when the film in question is Twisters. Last month, the director Mr Lee Isaac Chung was in Seoul for its Korean premiere, turning to a monotone ensemble that reads somewhere between unruffled and breezy on our barometer. Black is, of course, a colour that can be dropped into any box on a Dungeons & Dragons moral axis, depending on how you wear it. As a double-breasted suit and matching open shirt, we’d put it somewhere in the neutral good segment of the grid. Deft deployment makes it a safe option, if one with an edge, depending on which way the wind blows.

Mr Adam Sandler

You know which Hollywood actor trousered the most in earnings over the past year? Mr Adam Sandler. And the Hollywood actor you’re least likely to see actually wearing trousers? Also Mr Adam Sandler. Now, we’re not suggesting that these two facts are in any way connected – in Tinseltown, you can still have a very fruitful career without sporting “goofy” shorts. However, not having to worry about money could also translate to not having to worry about what to wear. Entire dissertations could be – and have been – written about what constitutes as “Sandler style”, but the man himself doesn’t get bogged down with the details. “Whatever is in the closet, I grab it,” he recently revealed on TikTok as his secret sauce. “Sneakers that fit,” he offered at a push.

Mr Samuel Arnold

If you’re familiar with Emily In Paris, you’ll know that Mr Samuel Arnold’s TV counterpart, Julien – Emily’s colleague and closest friend at Savoir – doesn’t shy away from bold shades. And his real-life wardrobe doesn’t, either. Does he perhaps know anything about the emotional power of colours? Albeit a little more toned-down than his usual Barbie-pink, bright-red or lemon-yellow layers on screen, the 33-year-old actor stepped out in style in a full mauve suit. Colour psychology teaches us that purple “promotes harmony of the mind and the emotions, contributing to mental balance and stability”. And that’s exactly what this look has done to us.

Mr Jeremy Allen White

Here at MR PORTER, we’d call this a signature JAW (-dropping) look. Not for the items of clothing themselves, but for the sort of intentionally unserious yet elegant way in which they’re worn. But what would you call it? An everyday look, perhaps? Or something that’s well put together, easy to style, and that can take you from day to night with little effort? Does it even matter if you’re Jeremy Allen White? Point is, the 33-year-old The Bear actor knows what cooks in his kitchen. And we’re here for it.
